These ones are FIAMM although not identified as such on the site, if you visit the store you can see that they are:

mounting air horns

just to give all and anyone some good tips on the placement of air horns, mine are mounted in the passengert side cowel compartment. look at my gallery pics to see what i mean. youll see my oil catch can in the pic and the compressor with air horns all nicely mounted close together. and all the sound escapes through the vent witch makes them heard very well heard out of the car. and using a relay is highly recomended. air horn sound is instant with this setup.

those are the ones.

JCW also sells a nice chrome set (which i have) for a few bucks more. Also, if anyone cares ( ) the harbor freight horns are a lower tone than the ones i purchased from JCW. my friend has harbor freight horns on his GTI and i have JCW ones on my cooper.

i'll get a link to the jcw site

I have a horny, uh i mean, horn install question (sorry, had to say it).

I bought the FIAMM airhorns. This may be a really basic question, but, can I just cut the + and - leads of one of the stock horns, and run them directly to the FIAMM compressor? The kit comes with a fuse (?). It's a small box with 5 spots for crimp connectors. Do I even need it? The instructions also state there is a difference between ground activated and positive activated horns, and the install is different depending on which you have. Anyone know which the MINI has?

Also, do I need to disconnect the battery when doing this install?

Please tell me the connection can go directly to the compressor!

Thanks!

first off, DISSCONNECT THE BATTERY!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok, next, take the passenger side horn wire, slick back some of the electrical tape and use wire taps to plug into the lines. simpe and it can be reversed!

The connections can go directly to the compressor. Using the supplied relay may diminish the lag that it takes for the compressor to start up and sound the horns. But the lag is quite short and almost imperceptible.

If you're careful you can get by without disconnecting the battery. I suppose it depends if you feel lucky, punk.

Much thanks! I'm installing that sucker today.

I think I'll disconnect the battery. The way my luck's been, I'll fall, and wind up with my tongue on the battery terminal.

Job done! It sounds great. I mounted the whole thing in the passenger side cowl area. The only problem was it's about 95+ in my garage.

My first mod to the '05. Many more to come.

Well the horns were not working this morning. Checked it out, and it was just a blown fuse. Anyone think this'll happen again? Is there any way I can avoid blowing a fuse, like putting an inline fuse in the line to the airhorns?

Not having horns in Miami is like, well, not having a gun in Miami!

Use the relay that came with the horn kit.

My sense is that the compressor is drawing a higher amperage than the stock horns, thus blowing the fuse. You could play around with higher rated fuses until you found one that didn't blow and hope that it doesn't melt the wiring. Or, you could...

Use the relay that came with the horn kit.

jump the power from the factory wiring and ground the horn to the frame or to an engine mount.

It would be just as easy to install the relay that came with the horn kit.

Thanks. I'll look into these options, and in the meantime, buy a couple spare 15 amp fuses!

As far as I can tell, the MINI comes with a horn relay... I think K2. Should the factory relay be removed, and the new relay take its place, or is it ok just to put another relay in the circuit... and if so, before or after the stock relay? Thanks much!

Because a blown fuse could indicate that the aftermarket horns draw more current than the factory relay delivers. The best answer is to find out why the fuse blew in the first place.

It is okay to put another relay in the circuit, it won't hurt anything. If you choose to do it this way, the aftermarket relay should be after the factory relay. As I said above, the best thing to do is find out why the fuse blew in the first place. The answer to that question will tell you the best way to proceed.

Thanks Kevin for the fast reply. No blown fuse with me... but I hope to avoid that though. I'll put the supplied relay after the stock one, and near the new horn as possible. I'm also going to swap-out the 15A fuse for a 20A one, per my new horn's directions... Thanks.

I found out the airhorns I used also were drawing 20amps, and the circuit for the stock horns has a 15 amp fuse, so that was it! It's been fine since!

So, you just replaced the 15A fuse with a 20? I was going to do that with the horn that I'm planning to use...

Yep, exactly! Hasn't been a problem since (a couple months).
