Using car antenna with pocket scanner...

Not sure if this is the right forum...

I want to get behind the HK stereo head, to where the antenna plugs in, and Y off the antenna cable so I can also have my pocket scanner plugged into the car antenna.

Is is fairly easy to get back there without taking a bunch of stuff apart?

antenna and scanner

The MINI has two antennas. One is on the roof, and the other is the rear window defogger.

They both run to an amplifier behind the plastic in the rear of the car, near the C pillar.

The amplifier PROBABLY only passes the radio frequencies the MINI expects a radio to need. (AM is around 1 Mhz, FM is around 100 Mhz.)

It is not likely that your scanner would find the antenna lead useful. Most of the stuff you probably want to hear is around 150 Mhz, 450 mhz, and 800 mhz.

Seconding what Jdewey said. The MINI uses a tuned dual diversity amplifier for FM, and passive operation in the AM band. While you might get some coverage outside of these broadcast frequencies, you are likely to encounter poor operation in the common scanner frequency bands. A small magnetic or glassmount antenna would probably fit the bill unless you are going for 'stealth'.

I was just thinking that having ANY antenna outside of the vehicle would be better then the little rubber duckie antenna inside the vehicle. I realize that the car antenna isn't tuned for the freqs I want to pick up, but I get so much signal loss from the body of the car.

Thanks for the feedback though!

What is a pocket scanner? Is that for radar detecting?
