-3,600 miles on service counter

hey guys,
got 2 minis of my own, no problems. my sister-n-law's 2005 R50 had cel on. The oil change count down is at negative -3600 miles (neglect). I change the oil, filter, reset the cel but I could not reset the count down counter to the next 15k setting. I tried using the tool different ways (like plug first then turn on and vice-versa but no luck. I'm wondering if since it's been negative for awhile that it will take longer to reset. never had this problem on mine since i don't let it go "0". Is there any trick to this situation? Anything i'm missing?

*would living the tool connected longer help?
*would disconnecting the battery?
*would resetting it from the dash/ignition/ODO button?
*do i have to donate an arm and a leg at the stealers?

any input is appreciated. (real or funny) Thanks!

You DO NOT use a tool to reset the counter in a gen1 MINI. (a very expensive shop tool can set a specific # for you in the countdown though)
The resetting of the miles is accomplished by entering the menu through the odometer re-set button.
Somebody will likely post a link with the directions, but a quick search will get you the instructions.

This link has three (slightly) different procedures for resetting the interval indicator, since some cars can be a little bit finicky.

Thanks for the quick replies. My tool does reset the counter to 15,000 automatically on my 2 other R53's. This is my first time I used it on an R50. It should have the same system. Just can't figure out why it's not working on this one R50. I was wondering if the -3,600 reading has got anything to do with it.
