R53 Navigation - Onscreen Volume Control

Does anyone know if the onscreen volume control on the navigation can be modified to be functional? I changed the radio in my car and added an auxgate from newministuff.com to allow the navigation sound to work with the aftermarket radio. The problem I'm having is that the auxgate I bought has a volume control physically on the module, and with it tucked behind the radio, it makes adjusting the volume for the navigation nearly impossible while installed. Is the onscreen volume control functional to any wiring outputs from the navigation computer or screen? or is it just there because this unit is used in other BMW's, and there is no actual sound output on any wires that can be controlled?
