JCW Kit & SMOG

Hi all...

During MTTS I remember seeing the window sticker on some of the new GPs and noticed that the SMOG indicator bar was pegged to the right at most pollutant (for that size engine/car). I imagine the regular JCWs aren't that far behind.

So what I'm wondering is whether anyone knows if as far as SMOG is concerned (and preferably for those in the know in California) does the JCW have a different set of minimum emissions requirements over a standard MCS?

What I am getting at is that I am thinking of ordering the JCW Tuning kit.
I'll probably wait to run through my warranty before I put it on. But in either case, once it IS on AND if the standard MCS is held to a different emission requirement than the JCW it would indicatethat I am going to be hating life when it comes to SMOGing the car?

BTW In the JCW accessory catalog, the Tuning Kit stickers for $4775 and then separately there's something called "Upgrade Kit to 207hp" with a different part number and a retail price of $560. Is that like a chip upgrade once you've installed all the hard parts or something?

Thanks,

-e

The range seems to go from 0 to 3 and the GP is at 1 - but you're right that 1 is at the end of the main bar.
So does that mean that 1 is as high as CA allows, or does it mean that 3 is the limit allowed for emissions, and maybe 1 is the limit for factory testing.

One reason the JCW for MCSa wasn't released in USA was because they didn't pass future (?2010?) emissions test levels.

Hey GBMINI...

That's weird... I thought all cars were expected to pass all SMOG tests in effect the year they are produced - NOT future tests...

After I posted my question I did dig up my original window sticker and although the car's "just" an MCS it also has its SMOG bar pegged at 1.0
I guess it's a relief to see that you guys with the GP don't have values over and above that 1.0

Another weird thing is that while your car and my car are the same model year, the numbers in the lower right hand part of the window sticker - those that indicate average fuel consumption for a similarly sized car - are completely different than mine: Mine read 11 to 28 CITY and 17 to 36 HWY.
Maybe halfway through the model year the EPA suddenly realized Hybrids were available for sale and as such changed the average readings for 4 seater cars our size... hahahaha

I figure that means that with or without JCW I should be just fine...
Pheww...

Unless of course there's someone out there that's had their JCW long enough that it needed a SMOG test and they would care to share what that experience was like?

Thanks,

-e

I could of swore the tritec engine as a whole produces that much smog. It is not because of the S or the GP.

I need to pull out my window sticker and check mine.

When did you get your car Eric; I think the government changed the way they calculate mpg figures this year - might explain the different "range" values.

You should have no problem with a JCW kit and California smog limits and testing. My JCW MCS arrived by train from Mini of the Hamptons in 03/04 with 13 miles on the odometer. I had to have a smog test completed to get California plates. It passed with flying colors, all zeros on measured parameters. The window sticker states: "Average Car = 1.02, This car = 1.0"
Go for the whole 210hp kits - you'll love the transformation.

GBMINI,

We ordered our MCS in May.
It was built on June 1 and delivered to us on July 20.
What about you?

Am I right in guessing that the "Upgrade to 207hp" is indeed a chip that goes on last after all the hard parts have been installed?

BUZ

Thanks for sharing your SMOG test result on your JCW...
Glad to hear it worked out that well...

Original JCW kits were 200 bhp or something like that. Kits from 2005 on included the air intake, injectors and new sw (I believe). Owners of older TC could buy the upgrade kit to bring the HP up to 210 bhp.
