Stock Intake Manifold Removal

Hello There

I am in the process of building my Mini's engine

I have removed everything from the engine bay and am getting ready to reinstall all the new components

The only thing stopping me is the intake manifold

I cannot get the darn thing off

It is hitting the supercharger outlet pipe as I remove the manifold along the studs on the passenger side of the car

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

The service manual says nothing about this

And I have no idea what to do - i tried to back out the sutds, but they are not long enough to double nut - and I do not know any other way of getting studs out

Someone please help

My car is sitting in my gargae in a million piecesa dn it is making me cry

You have to remove the supercharger.

So

What people are saying is that I need to de-tension the belt, and then remove the supercharger before I can remove the intake?

That seems stupid, but if you say so

The 2004 Mini Service Manual mentions nothing of this, but I guess that they changed the intake and supercharger outlet a slight bit between 2004 and 2006 so as the intake no longer comes off by itself

Sucks for me - I cannot finish all this by next weekend then so i will wait till after MTTS

Thanks

I would really like more input on this as I really think I am close and do not want to "file" the aluminum in my engine to make things work

Slow down pilgrim. Let's get terminology straight first. You say "intake" and "intake manifold" like they are interchangeable. They are not. The intake runs into the throttle body on the driver's side front of the engine, into the SC, through the passenger side runner, IC core, driver's side runner, to the intake manifold and then into the cylinders behind the FI's and the fuelrail. Are you removing the intake? Or have you removed the intercooler core and are physically removing the intake manifold??? If this is the case, and you have gotten past removing the fuel rail, which is required, and now you are stuck it's time to phone a friend. A VERY knowledgable MINI friend.

We’ll need more information; you said rebuild, if that’s the case that means head removal, once the camshaft sprocket has been removed, the head can be raised enough to pull the intake manifold without taking off the supercharger & supercharger output duct. The same for re-installation; before tightening the head bolts, torque the intake manifold nuts. Share where you’re at in the “rebuild” process please so we can provide appropriate advice.

Thanks guys

Well, I am putting on the Cosworth head

I have removed the front bumper cover and crash bumper, intercooler, tilted the radiator forward, and moved the fuel rail off to the side of the passenger fender

So, i need to remove the cam sprocket and then loosen the head bolts, lift the head up slightly, just enough to clear the intake, and then remove the manifold - I see what you mean exactly

Thanks for all your help

I was frantic last night because I could not figure out where to go next - now I have a clear shot and back to work I go

Thanks

Let me get everything straight, I'm a little confused...Your changing the head and you need to get the intake manifold off but you can't get to some of the bolts. Why don't you just remove the head (with the intake manifold still on) and once you have it on the bench switch the manifold to your new head. Just an idea -- Johan

If you had said what you were doing in your first post a better answer would have come. Rebuilding your engine is not the same as putting on a new head. Just do what Johan said.

The indexing dowel on the block gets in the way.

Although, with my method nothing gets in the way.
