whats up. ok im new on here and this question may have been answered before but.... Ok i just ordered a 2003 S itll be here in june. til then im trying to build up some basic parts to but on when it arrives. I come from a world of civics and other imports of that nature so im not as familiar with alot of the companys making performance parts for the mini's. But every thing ive read so far has been about those companys like minimania, monster mini etc. in regards to intakes has any one tested aem's short ram or cold air intake kit for the mini cooper s. aem has made some good numbers on many import and domestic vehicles in the past and i just recently saw that they have intakes avaliable for minis. Just curious to see how they mach up to others ive seen specs on thanks and sorry this is so long.

If you want to find out which parts are the best, check out RandyBMC's company MINI Motorsport. It's a great comparison of real output- not the claimed numbers, the real numbers. He's got other comparisons on there too if you choose to do more mods.

WELCOME! And great choice. Good luck with your mods choices.

Just so you know - every aftermarket item is on http://www.mcshp.com with the claimed horsepower gains. Useful for any tuner.

Welcome EBMINIS!

For the S, there seems to be two different camps.

Camp A: They like the BMP/Promini intake as it allows them to install the BMP/Promini strut brace. Heat shield is not completely isolating. Cost is less than Camp B. Dyno shows about 4-6hp.

Camp B: They like the MINI-Madness intake. It has a complete heat shield and a larger filter than camp B. Dyno shows about 7-9hp gain.

...and I guess Camp C: K&N....but this puppy is odd and the aluminum tubing is not heat friendly. Not but a few using this currently....

Granted I'm biased...but I did start with the BMP, but after seeing the dismal dyno returns on MY car I switched to the Madness intake.

As for AEM, as far as I can tell from initial research this is only for the Cooper, not the Cooper S.

Welcome to MCO, ebminis.

There has been a lot posted about intakes for the S here on MCO. Use the search feature to read the opinions from all the camps. You might even want to wait on the intake decision until after you take delivery. There are new intake choices on the horizon. Right, Randy?

AEM does make an intake for the S, but no one (at least here) has reported using it. As for the K&N, I think Helix finally had one on the dyno and reported good gains. I'd wait for more reports before buying this one.

More importantly, though, and what I'm waiting to see, is the intake that Vivid Racing promises is coming (may be the same one that Alta is promising good gains for, as Vivid resells some other Alta bits.)

They say it'll include a replacement silicon intake tube, heat shield and cone filter. (IIRC Alta said they were getting a repeatable 12hp out of theirs. Caveat Emptor.)
