Drivetrain Keeping Traction
Keeping Traction
Well, now that I have the 16% pulley.... I can't keep traction. Thankfully, I'm not into dragging, because this would suck as a drag car. Hell, I don't even have my Alta intake yet... (on the way).
Start gentle, foot completely off the clutch at 10-15mph... then stomp the pedal to the metal. Floors it, and from around 3000-4000rpm burning rubber, get a little traction for mabe 500rpm, and then burning rubber up to redline. Shift into second, it grips and takes off. DSC off, it burns through both first and second with no letup...
Does 15% do this too? Anybody have any way of keeping traction? My guess is the fact that I have snow tires at the moment isn't helping much....
Anybody have dealer discounts for Nology?

Make me think you're also not on straight up pavement, snow, gravel, sand, oil and all that other crap on the road esp. you towns aren't running cleaner in the winter will make things slip. also easing up on the gas will help
Its a throttle NOT A SWITCH!!

I'd suggest new tires. Something like Nitto NeoGen tires in the 215 wide variety. I'm having problems getting mine to light up in second gear even with my 250whp t/c set-up using these tires. Very very sticky. Of course my roads I'm driving on are dry and clean and the temps are good too.

How about installing a Quaife LSD. That would go a long way to solving your problems. That and keeping that kind of driving off the streets and on the track where they have higher traction pavement without sand, oil, and other drivers.
Man, I never would have been able to do this with my Mini, even with more mods then just a 15%. I could burn out from a stand still, but never from a rolling start like you describe. Consider yourself lucky that you have such a powerful Mini....
I have this issue all the time, instructing people at autocross schools and events... It's hard to get people to feather in the throttle instead of using it as an on/off switch. Once you get that down, though, you'll find it's a much faster way to get from 0-60, through the twisties, around the autocross course, or around the track...
I wish I had your problems
. Our '02 MCS is still stock in terms of engine mods and I can't even do that in the wet. Unless my ES 100's have amazing levels of grip, I won't be loosing tracktion any time soon. Luckily, I've got an intake and pulley in the plans this year

I used to have this in Alice (15% pulley, HAI) where after taking off from a traffic light, into 2nd, stomp it and get significant wheelspin. Since I dumped the runflats and went with a 215/45-17, I get much better traction.
I also tend to use the accelerator as an on/off switch. It's FUN!

Why would you think you can get your snow tires to grip and go? They grip fine in the extreme cold, maybe better than summer rubber in the extreme cold, but they're no summer tire on a warm road surface. Best to take it easy on them unless your goal is to trash 'em.
No...
I'm in Chardon, Ohio... I guess you guys don't live around here. Driving without snowtires at this time of year is suicidal. We're supposed to get 50+mph winds and snowstorms tonight, and Saturday will have the highs at 19F... So it's butt cold, and the roads aren't warm. I'll probably have the same thing with my stock Eagle RSAs as well. Hopefully the ADR rims with Falken tires will help.
Actually, I found that in general, I drive more gentle than I did before the pulley. It just doesn't need anymore power for normal driving, and now if I go into 5th, I WILL be going 55+ weither I want to or not.
I guess I'm just afraid to keep it in high rpms lest I blow the SC. Is that a reasonable fear?

But, to be honest, you're not gonna blow your SC in under 100,000 miles unless you REALLY abuse it, even with the reduction pulley [high rpm at a track for long periods of time]. This will be true but in the most rare cases, and even then the only reason for failure would be a bad SC from the go. Will the SC last forever? No. It's supposed to be rebuilt every 100,000 or so in stock trim, anyways, I do believe, just like any other SC or turbo.
So, by all means, ease into it. Only do what you're comfortable with. That said, honestly, give her hell! It's lovely, I promise! And, it's safe by just about any measure.

Back on topic: The snow tires are your problem. When we had the evo with snow tires it was automatic drift machine on dry roads. The best thing we can do this time of year is sit and wait patiently for summer to return.
