oil catch can

Can a regular cooper (non-s's and therefore no intercooler) gain anything from an oil catch can? If you're looking at the engine there appear to be two "places" where the engine is breathing? Is the engine expelling or inhaling oil/air through these holes?

I would assume they expell except for the fact that certain pictures of people using the HAI (hot air intake) show them having placed a "mini k&n filter" over the hole on the right side of the engine?

Or are the regular and s engine designed differently in regards to all of this?
