I have sent e-mail to K&N asking them to provide details, pictures and dyno results. I will post what I get back.

The first reply I got back states that for the Cooper S they are only offering the drop-in air filter for the Cooper S. Part # 33-2270. They told me to check back in 60-90 days for maybe more information. I have replied back to get verification that the Typhoon system they list for the Cooper is only for the Cooper and not the Cooper S.

Here is the latest reply from K&N.

The Typhoon kits are only applicable for the 2002 Mini Cooper S. They are not yet approved for the 2003 Mini Cooper S. It may fit I just would not recommend using at this time. It will not be emission legal for 2003. We are currently fit checking to see if the 2002 kit will work on the 2003 model.

Is there really any differences between 2002 and 2003 that would cause fitment issues?

I haven't used the K&N Typhoon myself so I can only relay what K&N tells me. You can read more on the system at their web site http://www.knfilters.com/typhoon/Typhoon.htm. I will say that I have used K&N filters in my race bikes and in cars and have always been very happy with them. Not always going to give the most hp but they last forever.

I don't know of any differences that would cause a fitment problem but for some reason K&N says they need to test before they will say it will work on a 2003.

Probably legal issues... if MINI changes something but K&N says it will work it will cause problems. I've seen this before, nothing is listed for a new car. Typically if you know it will work for the year before and you also know that not much has changed then you should be ok.

Check out K & N's website, http://www.knfilters.com/default.htm

It shows the same Typhoon part number for both the 2002 and 2003 MCS.

I had a local body shop paint it. They sanded it down allot and used several coats of primer and paint. The paint did not want to stick to the plastic at first. Autofix in Bohemia (Long Island) did the work for me.

Doug, nice paint on the IC cover... I saw the JCW's silver and thought that was kindof cool but I like the blue. I'd have to go Indi Blue though

Also anyone who has the K&N Typhoon intake have any HP numbers? I know it's hard for a dyno to show HP with an intake due to lack of airflow at a standstill but maybe someone has a gtech or a pocketlogger or something to show boost even? I'm really interested in the K&N because the peice that comes from the grill is bent slightly decreasing the airflow on my MCS and the K&N typhoon is the only one that I know of that replaces this peice. Also I kindof like the blue colored one that they have.

I do not have numbers but here is dyno chart

I can definately feel the diference between my stock set up with a drop in Alta filter and the K&N set up. Plus I luv the sound of the supercharger as the revs rise.

Were the before and after just the K&N or did you have other mods? Also the HP numbers are there but it's nice to see the actual graph. It's at the top...

Run 9: HP - 158.7 and torque - 139.7
run 10: HP - 167.6 and torque - 144.3

Which gives you...
+8.9HP
+4.6fp/torque

Of course that's just the max. The real gains can be seen by the graph. I was trying to decide between the K&M intake or new brakes but I think I may have to do the K&N now.

Those are similar to the numbers we have seen for that intake, until you let it sit on the dyno atr idle for a few minutes. The K&N is definitely the MOST prone to under bonnet heat issues compared to any other intake. I can offer it (in fact I have sold two) but I would rather see you with another product that works better under all conditions. The Rogue, Alta or even the BMP are all better applications for the MINI (and they all cost less too).

Hope that helps!

Randy

The Dyno graph is from Helix's web site is is not the one for my car. From what I understand The heat shield does not make much of a difference when a car is at speed. I have had a friend test Air temps with stock air boxes and High Flow Cone filters and they said the Difference in temp perature is very minimal when the car is at speed and at idle.

I hope that makes sense

I think the main problem would be that at idle, engine heat would creap in since the air filter is not enclosed. I'd imagine that once you start moving you'd get new air in anyway so that issue should be minimal. I still haven't made up my mind though... I am kindof considering the Alta or K&N. I've already had good experiences with the K&N filter so I'm kindof leaning that way.

Randy:

I have a 2003 MCS (picked her up last month). How much does the BMP intake cost, how difficult for me ('impaired') to install, and how reliable is it? thanks

I know this is an old subject but I removed my BMP and installed a K&N Typhoon last week. I have the airbox mod/cutout and just by changing to the K&N system it feels like the car pulls better from 4000 rpm and up.

As far as the heat issue goes, today at Buttonwillow Raceway I completed 8 hard laps and popped the hood as soon as I got out of the car. I grabbed the intake tube and it was cold to the touch. The filter itself was also cold. Sure, after sitting for awhile it heated up with no airflow going over it, as it probably did on the dyno, but it does stay cold when driving.

Been a K&N fan for years. Ran them in my race bikes, both dirt and road race, and they were bullit proof. When it came time to do the intake for my 03 MCS I did a ton of research and talked to alot of people who know much more than I and wound up installing the Alta and it is fantastic. The car runs great and w/WOT it SCREAMS, litterally!!!!!!! IMHO
good luck
Craig

I have it as well and love the performance boost. Any of the intake replacements will improve the HP. My main reason for K&N was the look, it's worth opening your bonnet for:
