I have heard that driving style has much to do with how fast the mini cooper is. I have experimented with my mini to see if I could get more power out of it by changing my driving style. This experiment is more of a seat of the pants type experiment...not at all scientific. First I found that if keep the motor between 1500 and 2000 RPMs and vary the throttle, I have more power when I floor it. Next I realized that if I run first gear at these RPMs varying the throttle not flooring but gassing it and letting off gassing it letting off, when I finally floor it it seems to have more power. I think now gassing it and letting off is the key no matter the RPMs. Has anyone else noticed anything like this? or could it be a placebo?

1500 & 2000 rpms? I don't think my MINI's engine goes below 3000 except from a standstill!......

If BMW had any say in the engine control module, then extracting max HP is kind of a voodoo science, you just have to "know" what the car wants to do. Option: drive it like you stole it; it'll learn how to behave eventually

neither MC or MCS performs well under 2500 rpm, which is a function of the engine design which is dissappointing.....I keep mine over 3000rpm

Just finishing reading the new Mini Book on how the mini was designed from the start, the guerilla marketing effort and the choice of the engine. The book was terrific read and was pretty objective, especially talking about the choice of the engine which boiled down to BMW trying to save money and also get an engine that was already developed....as a result choosing the Chrysler engine which was also being planned for the Neon and PT Cruiser in Europe (not real flattering).

Fascinating to read and incredible engineering and forward thinking on everything about the mini except the engine choice which even puzzled the authors....

"Butt Dynos" are notoriously unreliable. I'm going to have to side with "drive it like you stole it; it'll learn how to behave eventually". That makes the most sense to me!
