Drivetrain HAI - how often do you clean the filter?

HAI - how often do you clean the filter?
Curious about how often HAI guys are cleaning the K&N 1550 filter. I know the K&N site says their filters are good for 50,000 miles or something...But really, how often should the more obsessive owner clean it?

Depends on road and driving conditions
Even though it could last that long I doubt it would look as nice after about a year of use in a dirty or dusty environment.
If the filter looks black and dirty then clean it and re-oil it about once yearly, that's usually what I end up doing. Don't apply too much oil.
