Drivetrain Innovative SMG-like Shiftlight
Innovative SMG-like Shiftlight
Just found this over in the MINI2 Racing forum, and thought it was pretty slick:

I already have a SW shiftlight that I really like, and I won't part with it because it shows RPM's also (LED, increments of 10). Discerning RPMs on our tach is not so easy...
Either way, I think this is pretty cool.

I feel that from 4k+, it jumps quite nicely. And when really engaged in the turns, I find the blue LED's firing at me to serve as a nice reminder to move the Whalen
.
And since I prefer to note my RPMs, and RPM ranges (like at idle), or when troubleshooting something, I really like to have the more accurate LED read-out of my RPMs.

I don't see the point. When it hits the rev limiter, shift. Problem solved
Shoot, I don't even need a tach lol.....

Getting "bounced" by the rev limiter is something l like to avoid. It just kills the acceleration...
As I understand it, knowing one's unique set-up via a dyno can indicate where it's most beneficial to shift, so as to make the best use of the power band. Having a light triggered at that juncture is nice. Or for those with smaller reduction pullies, an added reminder to not over-work the SC, such a shiftlight can be an asset...
I like to know what my car is doing, so having a tach, particularly an accurate reading, is nice. At idle, (not initial start-up, where it's over 1k), it does indeed run at 750 RPM. It will drop to 740, and go up to 760, fairly often though. On occassion, it might dip to 730 and go up to 770, but by looking at the MINI tach, or listening, one would be hard-pressed to note any differences. Also at idle, I have "18's" (or what appears to be) on the column: 18 vac, and 18 psi (oil). The voltmeter is not doing 18 thankfully (14 and change)

When troublshooting a TB sometime ago, noting the range of idle RPM fluctuation was very easy to do with my shiftlight. If it has an RPM read-out, I find a shiftight to be a nice tool to have...
