Looks like a data logger, code reader with code reset function. It appears to be shareware and the only costs are for cables? Its not clear to me.

My real question is: Will it work with the cable I bought for my laptop to do the MTH flash? Or does one need a cable with all the pin areas populated?

thx, gents.

Being the adventurous soul . . .

that I am, I downloaded this and gave it a try with the cabling I purchased for the MTH Software. It was a no go for me.

One of the reasons may be that not enough pins are there in the plug. He mentions in the help file that ISO format cars require pin 7 for readings, a pin that is not included in the plug that I purchased from OBD3. Also, he mentions that no interface is required, you can make a direct connection using his OBD plug to RS232 cable. So that could be one of the issues as well since the cabling from OBD3 includes an interface module along with the cables. I tried on multiple com ports and received error messages on all because the system could not connect.

If someone else has a different cabling system that they purchased, I would be interested if it works for you. I would like to use this product and it is cheaper then some of the other systems out there that cost $$ and provide the same sort of data.

Of course, if I have to buy one of his cables, I may just go with one of those other commercial products. Who knows . . .

Well done, cheiron! I was going to do just that, this weekend when I had some time. Not surprised with your results... I suspected more pins would be necessary-- you've confirmed that.

I've read that Eric at Helix uses this product. There have been some good discussions here on other products of this nature. I like the palm products for their size. I would also like to log a 3rd, wideband O2 sensor, though. Ultimately, I'd like to find a shareware application that does it all, and allows one to tune fuel and timing advance. I'm a cheapo... can't bring myself to pay for a product... yet.

I wrote today asking a couple of questions about the product. One of them was if they have plans for a handheld release.

He also mentions on his site, which I assume you read, that his product only records things and allows you to reset the check engine light. He was pretty specific about it not allowing any tuning of the ECU.

Great! I did read his site and see that this is strickly a logger/scanner. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to do it, but I want the ability to tune the fuel and timing maps-- I'll obviously need a logger to do it effectively & safely. I can't find any dyno tuners here in Italy, and I don't move back to the states for another 18 months or so.

Found a couple of reasonable products that will tune fuel maps... like the Apexi. If Unichip or the GAIC would release a user interface, I'd be all over it.

I'm to the point in my mods (see below), that I should really focus on the fuel & perhaps the timing maps. While I'm certain that I'm maxing the factory injectors, the MTH goes a long way in smoothing out throttle performance. I've got a header to install, and a spare head to port or core for a performance head. Got my eye on Randy's head, Pilo's head, and MiniSport's head. I'm also watching Helix & Pilo's postings regarding their injector R&D. That will likely be my next major purchase - injectors & a means for tuning them. In the meantime, I'm on a quest for cheap data logging with perhaps tuning capability.

Please let us know if ODB-2 plans a handheld release.
cheers!
