Throttle Body, What Size???

I have a ’04 MCS/w Works. I have added a K&N Typhoon Intake and will be replacing the header with a 4-2-1 in the future. Right now the quest is for the proper size throttle body. As I am sure most of you know they are available in 61, 62, and 63 mm. So what size is right for the Works Kit?

I would greatly appreciate any input you can provide.

Thanks,
Dave

D1JL,

Here's a thread on MINI2 about optimum size of TBs:
http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=69947

Someone is saying that the smaller the TB the better for low end power (low rpm's) and the larger the TB the better for high end power (high rpm's). Don't know how that will relate specifically to the JCW MCS, but the principle should apply. So, it may depend on how you want to drive.

Yea, basically the smaller the TB, the more vacuum it will have at low rpm's. Larger diameters will give you more flow when the engine needs it at high rpm's but will sacrifice the vacuum down low. I wouldn't recommend a very large one unless you always drive at high rpm's and don't really care about sub 2 or 3k rpm torque.

Something to think about-
Match your throttlebody to the rest of your mods- esp ECU upgrade, intake, pulley, etc.
And think about how you are going to use your MINI- why you need a throttlebody upgrade. For street? Not really that useful. For autocross? You'd need to be in a non stock class if you did upgrade. For track?- sure, but you'll want other upgrades to get the most out of the TB.

With the JCW works kit, if you want a bit more low rpm power then an option would be a 61mm throttlebody (maybe the DINAN throttlebody for MCS) and DINAN ECU software or GIAC.

A 19% pulley would already offer a bit more low end power so to complement it, a 63mm throttlebody would be an option. Along with larger injectors and some ECU software (optimized for the 19% pulley).

If you know of others with the TB or JCW kit plus TB upgrade then go for a ride.
