Drivetrain (Cooper S) MINI Cooper S (R53) intakes, exhausts, pulleys, headers, throttle bodies, and any other modifications to the Cooper S drivetrain.

Drivetrain 15% pulley, only added boost in 1st gear?

But I'm actually leaning toward a weakening tensioner, here's why...
Normally you would think a loose or improperly sized belt would be more apparent in lower gears or at quick revs in idle simply due to the speed in which the RPM increases, but a tensioner that is just starting to weaken might do the opposite, quick RPM gains may not be effected as where slower RPM gains may be more effected by "belt bounce".
Just a thought.

Thanks! Your right.... That's how I did it before... I just haven't done it in a while so the oil is kinda building up.... I heard that method on YouTube from#MODmini.... He works on minis for a living I guess... That's who I go to before I do any work on my engine for directions on what needs taking apart and what doesn't.

Glad to hear you've found the problem.

Are there any risks to leaving that ZIPTIE on there other than less gas mileage? I have to drive to school tomorrow and it's an hour away.... I'm ordering a new bpv but it won't be here for about three days...

Not really risks as far as real harm, but I wouldn't, it will cause the ECU to make adaptations to the way things are working with it closed, and then it will have to go through another learning and adaptation process after you then make it right. I'd just deal with the "less power" option until the part gets there.

Good to hear it is a simple fix!! Yeah...guess the temporary fix was just that..I'd pick up a new one...they do go bad in more ways than the spring overtime....
Yeah...if the bypass valve is leaking or open, a r53 can be SLOWER than a Cooper.... Since the motor has lower compression with no boost.
Got it fixed just in time for the good weather too!!

I think you should be fine....just expect to get 3-4 less mpg, especially on the highway when you would normally be running unboosted in cruise!! Heck...You could leave the ZIPTIE off for the long drive...toss it on for "fun" nos that you know what to do...
If you did get a code of two, just know that a quick clearing with an odb2 tool will fix it...and adaptations will adjust over maybe 2 tanks of gas, so it will adjust back in a couple weeks.

Awesome! Good to know this stuff! I did cut the ZIPTIE off for the highway drive to college but put it back on just to drive around again the next day... just got my bpv and installed it today. Much better now. I now have a little sputter/ misfire in first if I get on it too hard too early. I figure maybe my plugs are too hot? I have NGK laser platinums.... I know! The temp is around 75 here in Arkansas right now! Always drive with the windows down anyway...
