Stand alone engine management

Well, here we go again...

I've been having some problems with my car lately, and the dealer is telling me that they think my DME has gone a little coocoo.
I've always said that if a non warrantiable part breaks down, that I will upgrade it, so I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about Stand Alone Engine Management units?

I've done a little research and found that the Tec3 from Electromotive is a good one
http://www.electromotive-inc.com/products/tec3.html

but I'm not sure exactly what is involved with all of this...

Any info? Any one do this to their Mini or other car?

Thanks,

L

Be very wary of thinking that aftermarket ECU's (DME's) can be fitted to a Mini, unless it's specifically designed for Mini. All of the ECU's (I think there's 7 or 8 of them) in a Mini are inter-connected via data busses and they all rely on each other for information. You can't just go ripping the engine ECU out and plug in something else. It ain't gonna fly.... The aftermarket ECU's, particularly from Electromotive, are primarily aimed at hot-rodders - street racing, drag racing, Bonneville, etc. or as a means of upgrading to EFI in a car that didn't originally have it. So if you want to upgrade, get a stock Mini ECU and do a software (chip) upgrade.

Why won't they warranty it? Over 50k?

They won't warranty because of the mods.

I got my car back Friday, and I've been driving it all weekend. It feels good, but I hate having these 2 lights consitantly in my face.
I'll porbably pass on the Tec 3 for the above reasons and more, but I just wish I knew exatly what is going on.

Thanks,

L

I had V36 with WebbPowerchip, but now I have V38.

I'll probably end up trying this MTH business and see how that works...but I'd love to get rid of these codes. They say that the busses are communicating, but that the DME is not understanding what they are saying...

:(

Ok, Do you mean the unichip?
If so then:
http://www.webbmotorsports.com/forum...opic.php?t=463
You need to have a cable replaced.

If not then:
Your v38 erased any software upgrade that you had and your ECU
should reset itself after 3 or so cycles.

HTH,
Ric
