AIT, how high is too high?

what air intake temps should i start to worry? im reading off the OBD2 port so im guessing its taking readings from the map sensor on the manifold, so im talking that with a grain of salt...

Under WOT?

Putin around?

Highway Cruising?

getting stuck in traffic or driving then parking the car and going back in.... the temps will spike real high but will quickly go back down....

Your Air temp is fluctuating wildly?

My air temp is pretty steady no matter if normal or WOT driving. Stopped in traffic it may go up a bit until I start rolling again.

My water temp used to spike on my Gen 1 in traffic or stopped because the 2 stage fan resistor was bad which is a known problem here on the boards.

Under WOT it should climb preety good after a couple of gears, a quick WOT single gear for a sec or 2 it wont change much.

typically I see 10-15 F deg above ambient driving normally or on the highway. if its lower speeds typically 15-25 F deg

yea i figured i would ask. last few days were high 80s low 90s and i have been seeing highway cruiseing temps around 105-120*F traffic is usually 115-130*F and the otherday. i was stuck in 1mph traffic.... literally took 1hr to move 1 miles. i saw temp rise all the wayup to 188*F once i got out of that it very quuickly droped to 90*F was a col night 75or so.

Today i poked around figures there was not a good seal between diverter and hood. but there definity is. i closed the hood looked inside through the scoop and saw the rubber flap right in front was blocking the scoop a bit and was covering the first few rows of the IC. i removed it and drove it around. temps did not get as high and when they did the dropped really fast. so ill drive around like this for a while to see.

its a stock IC with DDM diverter. also have -17% & +2%...... if i see temps are back to normal after taking out that flap ill be happy. but i plan on picking up a bigger scoop to pull in more air for the IC.

was told by a reliable source that after 50*C (122F) ecu begins retarding timing. i need to pull up the timing read out to see whats going on. with temps.

I though it was 100 deg F that it starts to pull timing, it seems like around that area I can feel a tad slower. but yeah in slow traffic that AIT will be high. luckily I don't sit in much, and if you use your AC theres more heat in the engine bay

Water injection, pre-blower. Forget the methanol unless you plan on tuning for it. Water can absorb far more heat before changing phase (Liquid --> Gas), meaning it cools the air charge significantly better than methanol or a water / methanol mix.

Read Post #2: Take note that the poster is using an M45 blower on a 1.8L motor. Pretty damn similar if you ask me... http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=389201

Cliffs Notes: He cut his IAT in half by injecting 100% water pre-blower.
