ALTA Heat Blanket

Hey all,

So looking at the variety of heat shield and wraps that are out there one can get a bit confused on whats best, both in function and looks. The heat shields by NM and M7 look clean and great, but from the thread listed, looks like it isn't the best for the turbo and more just protects the engine bay.

M7 Turbo Shield

That being said WMW makes a hot side cover that is supposed to help keep the ideal hot side hot, but doesn't necessarily look the best.

It seems like there is a solution to mixing both worlds, but I am curious if anyone has any personal experience with it yet. Its the Alta heat blanket

Alta Heat Blanket

Looks great, works right over the existing heat OE heat wrap, can also be used in conjunction with a heat shield for extra protection, but on the down side it looks a bit pricey compared to other options.

Thoughts, comments, and ideas as far as the combinations available are all appreciated

Why is aesthetic appearance a factor in this kind of purchase? the WMW blanket is made to fit under the stock heat shield so you the maximum benefit of having it on there, then it's hidden away under another effective product. A turbo blanket is never going to be a fancy "oh look at me" piece like those heat-soak shields(because honestly, that's what they do to your turbo, on the components you don't want heat on).

Either way, both blankets look to be of quality and function. I would absolutely avoid all the shields that just cover the entire turbo and trap the heat there.

I have the WMW turbo blanket.

This type of insulation has been used for years in the diesel industry...called lagging.

I even have one on my cummins 2500.

Keeps heat right where it needs to be, and not elsewhere.

I say go with the cheaper one, does the same thing, why pay extra when you'll never see the damn thing lol.

I didn't realize the WMW went under the stock heat shield. That being said I am leaning toward the WMW, but are there any pros to having the turbo wrap under the stock shield rather than over it like the alta is set up?

I wasn't even aware the alta wrap replaced the stock shield, or could go over.

It looks nice, I'm sure I does the same same job. There's no cons to keeping heat in the hot side of the turbo.

At the end, it really comes down to looks, which is where the price difference seems to be in this case.

Yes ours goes under the stock heat shield giving you a stock look but also allowing the stock design work. I'm flattered that alta came out with their blanket as we've been selling ours for years and had it custom made to be a perfect fit on the turbo. I don't like the idea of the full blanket as I want to keep the heat away from the valve cover.

The way I see things: The WMW one wraps tight to the hot side so it is where it needs to be in order to do the job, but because of it's tight fit design, the factory shield can still go on. So the blanket is doing the brunt of the work, as you'd want, then that factory heat shield only has the job of blocking a much much much smaller amount of heat than before the blanket, so there's a good chance almost no heat get's through to the engine bay, intake, hood scoop etc.

All that along with cost. I'm cheap, so the WMW blanket is more than I can justify spending now anyway, let alone the price of the Alta! So if either is in the budget, my personal preference would be the WMW. Put simply: If I had the extra cash allocated specifically for controlling the radiant heat of the turbo, I'd have that exact product on order.
