Tuning/"Chipping", R56 Automatic Transmission
Hello all!
I'll apologise for my lack of mechanical prowess ahead of time. Thus, any and all help would be appreciated. (I'm quite familiar with the "Search" function, by the way
) I've looked through NAM and haven't able to find a thread/post addressing the risks of tuning an automatic MINI with regard to transmission damage. From what I understand, any (moderately significant) increases in torque will put stress on the transmission and thus potentially cause some problems.
Also, I do understand that many will recommend *not* to tune an automatic because the gains will not be as significant than those done to a manual. I appreciate the concern and welcome other opinions.
Model: 2010 R56
Mileage: 23,678 (acquired at 17,589 appx. 5 months ago)
*I tend to push the car quite hard, already. The previous owners had not, as per my trusted mechanic, abused the car. When I purchased it there was no "turbo burn" under the hood. (Can't say the same now!
) Otherwise, it is well maintained and cautiously driven (when required by law
)
For those who can help:
- Is there a general limit to stay under (for torque) to prevent transmission damage?
- Could other performance components of the vehicle be damaged?
- Overall recommendations - go for it? No go?
Once again, my apologies for a potentially ridiculous set of questions. I appreciate your patience.
Best,
Pasha

It has the same risk as tuning a manual. If you get something like an AP or just have a flash tune done under stock you should be fine. It is when you start really getting dirty with it that you have to start worrying.
OP I saw this Thread and also was interested in what other NAM members would have to comment.
I see there was only one other post so not sure if the members that have the auto transmissions are not into the performance thing.
Or this has already been discussed on another thread/threads.

I've been running an AP on stage 1 for over a year on my car, and quite happy with it. Like Porthos said, if you are trying to get crazy with boost, power, or traction, you will increase the risk of trans damage.
I would not let the auto trans hold you back from reasonable (200-220 hp?) mods. If you think that you need more power than this, you will be spending some serious $$, and may want to ask some trans experts.

You'll be fine with 200-210 whp and 220-230 wtq.
I really don't believe people need more than that. I'm going with PAW because he needs my expectations and knows the limit on what an auto trans can handle.
