Because when you're doing things like changing turbos, a canned bench flash isn't going to cut it. It would take weeks to tune the car properly if you have to remove it each time you make an adjustment.

It's a fine option for a relatively stock car that can run well on a canned basic tune.

The JCW still uses the N14 engine which is easily accessible to the aftermarket.
The 2010+ S-models are the N18 engine which doesn't allow for easy programming (at the time of this writing).

But the JCW is worth the admission price. Beyond the brakes, the engine is revised with a different cylinder head for thermal cooling with strengthen intake valves. The pistons have strengthened side faces and the compression ratio is dropped to 10.0 (down from 10.5 in the 'S'). The air intake, the charge air piping, and turbocharger / exhaust manifold are tailored specifically for the JCW.

Think you will find valves are the same too (and not sodium filled)

Czar has posted this before. Many myths about differences when reality is the engine bar externals like turbo, exhaust manifold, airbox (at least here in UK) and pistons due to CR is the same.

So I would save money, get an S unless a JCW has more of what you want fitted as standard. If modding why pay extra to junk stuff. Difference in cost between MCS and a JCW can buy quite a few goodies to make the MCS better. Look at the Evolve MCS on minitorque threads, now running 290bhp from JCW Turbo, Evolve TBE, Evolve FMIC, remap.

Both the S and JCW exhaust valves are Sodium filled.

if the head pieces are the same, then what exactly is the "new head design" on the N18 engines?

And is it safe to assume that the rods and pistons are different between the 2?

Sorry was quoting part numbers for N14 engine (both the same). Whether JCW head on N18 will be different to MCS N18, I don't know but doubt it as mini tend to make the changes elsewhere. It is more economical to share the engine that way in Mini, Peugeot, Citroen.
