Drivetrain Catch Can, why so expensive
Catch Can, why so expensive
Hi All,
I am looking at catch cans, and notice that they really vary in price, all the way from $20 on ebay to $200 on many mini stores. Why so much? To me it looks like a metal can? Is it just some of the name brands are not mass produced in China etc?

at first i had a M7 OCC and that thing is always empty so i replaced it with a custom made. there are people here on nam swearing
on the BSH, i read it has something inside that traps the oil.
I'm betting they probably all are mass produced in china. Vendors will charge what the market will bear. Go to Summit racing, for instance, and you'll see what this stuff should cost. They sell r50 borla exhaust for $534.00 shipped.
I think most of the parts for the cars are overpriced. The heatsheild for the turbo is 150!! anyway I just purchased a can from ebay. It was a greddy. worked fine. I paied 30 for it. It has the blink I wanted with the functionality.
Happen to have a link to the can you bought? Any modification needed to get it on or was it made for the Mini?

I am also interested in the greddy.
Acallahan, those look nice, but the price is probably a little high still.
I heard that BSH can have a mesh interior also. But after doing a search, other car forums buy the really cheap $25 ones and put a metal mesh inside to catch more.

Hmm that is not bad compared to others, did that come with a bracket and hoses. I looked at the specs and liked the design of it. I sent an email, and we will see how much it will cost now. Lookinig at the site, they charge about $165 for the Mazda ones.
Where did you mount the OCC?

You can also make one from an oil / water separator for compressors (like air tanks, or AC compressors). It's basically a plastic "can" with fittings on either end, at the top. The can part kinda unscrews, and also had a built in petcock. They're like $8 or something.
Then you can put COPPER (only!!!) scour pads inside, to help catch more blow by.
Also, everyone says "it's oil, it's oil", but, when I Smell my "oil" it smells to me like mostly unburned fuel with only s little oil. So, the catch can is catching anything unburned that would normally be sent back into the engine. There's nothing wrong with this, save the fact that it routes through the SC and IC.
