Does adding W/M Injection require ECU Tuning?

I'm looking at adding a water/meth injection system to my 06 R53.

I'm aware of what the systems do and how they work, but confused about the need for a retune...

Doesn't the ECU just see a lower intake air temp and adapt as needed (by allowing timing to advance)?

And the effective octane of the mixture will end up higher when using meth? The ECU should adapt to this as well correct?

I found plenty of details on how the Devil's Own kit can be controlled to progressively increase spray as boost rises... Haven't found much info on how the Aquamist/Howerton systems are controlled (MAP/IDC? or both??)

Are there other tried and tested systems worth looking at? I'd prefer things to be as plug-and-play as possible. I had an RMW tune, but lost it when the dealer re-flashed my ECU... won't be able to get a retune anytime soon unfortunately due to my location.

Current mods include CAI and 15% pulley. Possibly a cam/header/injector/re-tune in my future when it's possible.

Water/meth injection does not just lower your piston surface temps. It also slightly bumps up your compression. Remember, you can compress air, but not liquids. If you have not done so, I would highly recommend upgrading your injectors. If you buy 380cc JCWs, you probably don't have to worry about retuning right now. Do a bit more research and keep the meth injection on the low side so you don't have any performance issues. Best to also call Jan so he can give you a little advice. Since he already tuned your MINI before, I'm sure he'll work with you.

440cc or 550cc injectors will require retuning right after installation. And you will probably want to go with one of these options if you are planning on getting the cam and header down the road. Otherwise, you will end up selling off the JCWs and lose some $$$ (unless you buy a used set to begin with).

For best power run stright meth with a tune....
It will add cool the intake charge, and reduce the chance of detonation....
using water/meth combo is from what I have been told more about mataining power....in hot weather....but a slight increase....
One warning....one water meth kit seller was telling folks to use washer fluid....it is water meth mix, but usually mineral ladden.....the minerals will crystalize, and tear up you motor....
if you make your own water/meth mix, use distilled/demineralized water only!!!
Or better yet, run meth, and have 2 tunes.....one off, one with meth!!
