I put the ALTA "CAI" in last night. I do feel like I lost a little of the lower end, but it sounds soooo good. Some of the fitments with the silicone hoses weren't that great. When I feel like driving fast I'll just put the stock box back on, no big deal.

better off just have going with the dos intake so you get more power and better sound

I personally would never use any kind of oiled filter because of the potential MAF sensor issues that could arise.

I regularly clean and lightly oil my filter and have yet to have an issue on any of my vehicles. I think its "how" you do it... obviously if you soak the sucker your gonna have a problem

You both offered a really great discussion point about oiled filters. The "how" is extra important.

K&N style filters only need a very light mist of oil from a recharger kit to work properly after cleaning. They also don't need to be cleaned as frequently as an comparable foam filter. We've had a few customers "soak the sucker" and get a CEL. Fortunately, some CRC Industries 05110 Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner is all it takes to make a CEL of that type go away.

Another thing we've found is that the Prince Engine's PCV system and aging seals on older/high mileage R55, R56, & R57 MCS's helps to allow spent oil vapor go just about everywhere through the intake tract. On older R56's, (w/o our CAI system) we've found oil vapor deposits all the way up to the MAF on some of the fresh air tubes that attach to the turbo inlet.

Don't want to sidetrack this thread, but thought I'd share some more info.

so much speculation on IAT's but no logs, dynos, etc to even back up those claims.

I am putting my stock air intake back on momentarily, so I will do some data logs for air flow and IAT for both the stock intake and the DoS

Although I never officially dataloged it, I switched from a DDM back to stock...and what I found was the once it got warm, IAT's never recovered as much on the stock intake as they did on the DDM. This is with a Helix IC also....

With my DDM back on and Helix IC, I'm never more than a few degrees off ambient when driving around town, and unless im beating on it for an extended period of time, IAT's never really go higher than 10 above ambient, and if they do, the recover real quickly. The recovery time with the stock intake took much longer.

I'd switch back to stock and go datalog and give you guys pretty graphs and data, but I can't put my stock intake back on with the tune I have. Did that once and the car goes nutso...so I'm not messin' with it.

DDM Motors... They make a closed system CAI that utilizes the hood scoop:

Here is a little video of my engine spooling to 4k rpm or so with first, the stock airbox. In the second frame I had installed the Alta CAI and you can really hear the difference and feel a much more responsive turbo when pulling around 3-4k rpm. Easy install, music to my ears! Love it.

Your saying you can feel spool while you have no load on the engine?

I was under the impression that CAI without a tune would loose power, but with a tune would be able to add some power, this at least how it was on my evo, and sti. Is the mini different with this?

Lol. Ok sorry I worded that improperly. I was revving the engine to test the sound and blow off with the stock box vs. the Alta intake. You are correct, I was not spooling the engine rather I was revving it.

However, I do know cold air intakes do not really add horsepower to your vehicle. I view a CAI as a solid starting point in which to modify your engine. They allow your engine to breath much better and yes, I really did feel a difference in the turbo spooling once it reaches the 3-4k rpm mark.

I want to see some of the DIY intakes people have done. Post pics!
