Should I just change muffle magnaflow#14862 or

what works best for sound?
Thanks

Why don't you just call their customer support line and ask?

Boston, I watched your video and am really impressed with the sound. Have you added a resonator yet? If so, did you get a Magnaflow or another type?
I want to do the same thing you did, have a muffler shop run 2.5" from the downpipe back, but I will want a resonator since I drive mostly highway and don't want to deal with the drone.

Was that resonator (muffler) recommended as a match to the muffler? Any thoughts on having the pipe shop keep the stock resonator with the magnaflow?

How has drone been without the resonator, especially on the highway?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to do it the right way.

Its mix and match. As long as you stick with the same brand/series, they are made of the same material and packed in similar ways, so your options are open. This is one of the resonators other people have run with my muffler if thats what you're asking. If you're worried about drone, leave the 2nd cat on and that will quiet things down a lot. Leaving the stock resonator without the 2nd cat won't do too much, as the 2nd res. is not that large and if anything will restrict your exhaust flow. Not to say the 2nd cat wont, but more free flowing = louder, cannot say that = more power, as too free flowing can also be bad.

Yes, mine is loud on the highway if I keep it at 3.2k rpm. But I cruise ~80-85 on the highway, which, in 6th, is right at 3k.
If you are "normal" unlike me, and you drive in 6th at 70-75, I believe its right around 2.7-2.8k rpm, which does not have any drone. However, all this can be modulated depending on how you work your throttle. Keeping about a 5-10% throttle gives me a quiet-as-stock (no joke) exhaust. Can't hear it. Thats in any gear cruising. So, yes, drone can exist with this exhaust between 3200-3900 rpm.
I dont know when I'll have my resonator on, but when I do i'll update you with drone status. Though, you probably dont want to wait that long =p

Lets just say a jcw stage 1 tune with a rmw tune on a r56 pulled 213 whp and 237 wtq, with many bolt on mods, i pulled 210 and 235 on the same dyno with just my exhaust and intake. So, cant pull conclusions, but my exhaust definitely isnt decreasing my performance. Stock R56's with a rmw tune didnt pull nearly as much tq.

I may have to try the exhaust without the resonator to see how the drone is, and then add the resonator if it's bad. I have a '70 Vette with dual DynaFlow Turbos, 3" straight through pipes, and most of the interior insulation stripped away. If I can drive that, I can probably stand whatever the Mini will put out. ;-)

I am in the 75 - 85 mph territory most of the time (thank you, V1 and Blinder), so I'll have to keep my eye on the RPMs to see where I'm at.

Can you give me a MagnaFlow part # for the resonator? I really don't want to keep the stock resonator or the no-use flow restricting 2nd cat. in place.

I really like the numbers you are getting. I had an A4 1.8t that I didn't change anything but the ECU chip. That was fun, but this time around, I want to do the intake (I am leaning towards the DOS), and the exhaust first, and then maybe a custom tune afterward.

That is, whenever I can scrape up the bucks.

my brother had a 1.8t (b6) with k04, tune, injectors, fmic, etc etc... i was still faster than him stock =p
he now just picked up a b7s4 last week 4.2L v8. He may have a chance now. lol

Thanks. I'll check the video again.

On the way home from work, I kept an eye on the rpms, and it was around 3k most of the time, 6th gear and 80 or so mph. It's a tough call because I'm the only one who is in the car 95% of the time, so maybe I'll do it the way you did and add the resonator later.

Your brother has good taste. I dumped my A4 for a B5 S4. V6 twin turbo sweetness. I kept that one all stock, but I read about a lot of crazy mods that would turn it into a rocket.

I sold that for the Mini because I have a 100 mile daily commute. Now, I have mod fever again!

Watching those vids makes me miss mine. I had a black on black, and most of them seem to be silver. I like that blue and yellow too.

I just knew that if I did just one mod to that car that I would have an empty wallet, bank account, maxed charge cards, divorce, you get the picture.

LMAO at your friend with the helmet on and hammering it.

My 1.8t was an Avant, 2002 that I bought new off the lot. I had a chip in it within a month. I had traded a '99 Z28 and the 1.8t was a bit weak compared to that car. This is what happens when you have kids, but it doesn't mean you still can't have fun. ;-)

BTW, do you know anyone who needs an ECU with a GIAC chip? I still have it.

The video shows the part # for the muffler and the tips, but not the resonator.

Thanks for the info, I tried your tips after reading your post and thanks again, I don't get that annoying drone anymore.

Hey Boston,
Any idea on the part number for the resonator?
I looked on the video and it isn't there.
I sent an email to Magnaflow and all I got back was an FAQ which doesn't answer the question.

Thanks a bunch.

So i took my R53 to the muffler shop today and i got this installed.

He cut after the cat mid section of the car (like round the back seats) He took my stock mufflers off.. and just routed pipe to the tips... (standered Y pipe chrome tips..

Its Extreamly loud...

around 3k it hits a peak of just loud... WOT after 3k or 3200 it dies down and mellows out... i like that part but.. damn in 6th gear... on the freeway.. around 75 - 80... its loud...

i dont really want it that loud...

Should i install a muffler after the resonator?

i only spent 200 bucks...

Or should i delete the resonator all together..

Is it common to add a matching magnaflow muffler with the resonator... please help me out.. i wasnt expecting this to be this loud.. Reminds me of loud *** honda but with out the raspy sharp noise... i wish i had a sound clip maybe i will make one..

If you're running straight pipes with that resonator, yea, its gonna be REAL loud. a muffler will quiet it down quite a bit.

@pyr, yes, resonstor and muffler together. A resonator is nothing but a pipe with a "muffler" around it, meaning, it has some dampening characteristics around the pipe, to reduce some of the sound waves to lessen the sound dB coming from the engine from the exhaust manifold. A muffler is just a larger form of a resonator, with bigger baffles/volume dampen sound waves. Having said that, the muffler will do more than the resonator, but having both will quiet it down a bit more, and may help to reduce drone a little bit. Drone is caused by the vibration resonating at a vertain frequency through the piping (which is why having different gauge piping and material density differences causes different behaviors in terms of sound and drone). Imo a thinner piping material will sound more tinny and raspy than say a low# gauge stainless steel pipe (lower # gauge = thicker material, just like speaker wire).

@ ghosthound, my gf is the same.. On longer road trips right now I find myself hovering in 5th gear for cruising to stay out of the 3-4k rpm range, ~80-85mph. Or going 70 in 6th. I need to get my resonator on, even to help the slightest with drone. She has even told me shes fine with my rough suspension and doesn’t mind the harsh bumps as much as she hates the drone. Let me know if you ever install your resonator and how it goes..
