Drivetrain FYI on ACT clutch/pressure plate bolts
FYI on ACT clutch/pressure plate bolts
I found out by mere luck that ACT shipped the wrong pressure plate bolts. They package 8mm x1.25 x15mm bolts and this is in-correct. The bolts should be OEM size of 9mm x1.25 x15mm of which is an extremely odd size. That is what the OEM flywheel requires and as such ACT decided to tap their flywheels in the same 9mm thread not sure why as its not neccessary and could cause catasprohic failures in the tranny if someone was to use the 8mm bolts on the ACT flywheel. The 8mm bolts do in fact thread in just fine, however that have .5mm grab less on the circumference of the bolt. I got lucky and 2 of my bolts popped out of the 6. Had that not of happened, I would of installed it that way unknowing and would be replacing the transmission in short order.
Just thought I would share. I was only able to find the M9 bolts from the dealer. Google came up with almost 0 results for actual bolts and all my sources do not carry M9 bolts even though they are an actual size, you can go to Sears however and get a tap for M9.

Yes, thanks a bunch. I bought an ACT Streetlite Steel Flywheel from Euro Sport Design back in October. Still sitting in the box since I totalled my '02 MCS. Gonna keep the factory clutch I have now until it wears out.

Thanks for the heads up...was looking to pick up the ACT clutch and flywheel combo...a very 'good to know' about the 9mm bolts. Couple of questions, how many of these bolts do I have buy from the dealer to install it ? And can I re-use the original bolts?
Cheers!
Jay
Original flywheel bolts can be reused. Check into what type of Loctite should be used on them. You do not necessarily have to buy replacements from the dealership. Check into whether there is a bolt fabrication shop on your area. In this area (Hampton Roads), one of the better shops is York Bolt. They have something for everything.
Yes you can reuse the pressure plate bolts, in my situation though, I did not have them to re-use. It's just a heads up if you have the time to get them from the dealer, they are cheap as you wont be able to find them anywhere, unless you get them made, which also may be an issue as the 9mm thread is not a normal standard and a machine shop may not have the threader in stock and would need to buy that size.
