Drivetrain What tire to get...
What tire to get...
Hi guys, I'm in the process in getting a new set of tires for my 05 MCS. I want something that will last me atleast 20k+ miles, able to take off with good grip on turns, smooth, and quiet. I live in Fresno California where it gets really hot in the summer and somewhat cold in the winter (rains a little). So far i have my eyes on the Bridgestone Potenza G 019 Grid and Avon Tech M550 A/S. I also have a budget from 100-110ea tire. My wheel size right now are 17" and what size would be preferable for my MCS? Thank you guys.

I looked into both of those tires for my car....the Grid g019 is IMO better....the Avon Tech is made by Cooper tire for the us market and got lots of so-so comments (very different than the European AVON's made by AVON)...mostly related to very soft sidewalls...and slightly loose handling. Cooper also lead the market in recalls, and make many private label tires that are very middle to the back of the back tires...mostly the market trailers.
That being said, i ended up with the General Exclaim UHP....a bit of a sleeper tire...not well known, but now made by Contential tire in France (my size anyway)....it is rumored to be the European Rain-Force tire...re-branded for the us market...and to help rebuild the reputation of General Tire. Generally I have been using it as a summer tire, that tolerates cold good enough to delay putting my dedicated snow tires. (It is a all season tire....but i would not want to drive them in more than a bit of slush!!) The price ended up being $89 or so including shipping(and rebate)...pretty happy with them vs what I paid....I might not want to track them...but a good road tire...and great in the rain.
A few important questions....what climate do do drive in......what are your driving style.....It sounds like you want some cold weather, all season tires...so the choices are kinda slim....I bit the built living up north and got a second set of rims.
Tire-Rack is a great resource...and they will give you good info on sizes and alternate sizes!!

+1 for tire rack. have bought 3 sets from them. I am currently running General Exclaim UHP 215 / 45-17 ( my second set) Low cost, good wear and great handling.
