My roomate (who knows infinately more about cars than I do) told me about smaller batteries( about the size of 2 coke cans) that put out the sam power as a stock battery, saving room, weight. This is the first I heard of this has anyone else heard of or used one of these?

Yes, this is the case, I run an Odyssey 680 which is a 14.5 lb dry cell battery in place of the stock battery. It saves about 25 lbs and has been great. I did this because I autox in SCCA STX class.

It has worked fine with one exception - I didn't start the car for a 16 day stretch and when I went to start it the Odyssey wouldn't crank it, so i put in the stock battery, started the car and then put the odyssey battery back in while the car was running - once the battery charged up, all was good. No problems since.
