What is your take on Dynolicious?

So I recently downloaded Dynolicious to my iphone, needless to say I am addicted. There is one problem, I keep getting inconsistent numbers all the time. So far I haven't been able to get an accurate HP reading. I think the 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times a +/- accurate.

I can't seem to find traction at all. I spin my tires all the way to redline on 1st. Only one time I was able to grab and it was my best time. 0 to 60 in 6.26 sec and a 1/4 mile in 14.09 at 109 mph. I have no idea if those numbers are real or if the program just sucks.

I calibrated the phone using a level and a perfectly leveled surface.

I hate the fact that the conti extreme tires spin like it's going out of style.

Any ideas or opininons about Dynolicious?

I can't seem to find a propper launch technique. I launch between 2600-3100 RPM. I always get the same result, spin until redline. Hints please!!

I've heard it's best to feather from around 2500 rpm and not reach full throttle until almost redline in first gear. "I" am not very good at launching this car though, my foot is more like an on/off switch, so I'm still working on the "feathering" part.

Are you dumping the clutch.. If so trying slipping/riding it alittle. Alittle spinning is fine but not smoking the tires. Once clutch is out, the RPM's should about maintain their rise upward. No big rise (lots of spining) or drop (bogging) in RPM at that second..
That's my technique. Might not be the best but works for me..

Yes, I am dropping the clutch. I will try feathering the clutch this weekend. This time I will do it at another location. It is flatter and smoother. I'm thinking about getting new tires. Maybe Yokohama Paradas.

I never got very good measurements with my iPhone. Honestly a 14.0 is pretty amazing. My best time at a real dragstrip (corrected for altitude) is 14.6 You have to be putting a lot of HP to get in the low 14s and then 13s with a Mini. It's just not a drag car, period. Now if there was an AutoX course between the christmas tree and the 1/4mile line, we'd win every time!

btw, Yoko Paradas suck.

Hey nuke. I like dynolicious but have never put too much stock in the HP reading of that or my scangauge. As for the spinning tires, maybe try getting some new ones. You dont still have the runflats do you?

Phil, which were the tires that you recommended me the other day? I agree about the HP needed for low 14s or a high 13s but remember to factor in the driver and a good launch (I suck at that).

I think the best tire is Bridgestone Potenza for summer(recommended from a friend). I have already Pirelli tire it is sucks.

I don't think it's that accurate...I'm sure you all know that its based off of how much your phone tilts in the car.

Here's my current setup: alta cai, 15%, ignition, and exhaust. I'm sitting on stock suspension, r90's w/ 215/45 gsd3's.

This is my results:
0-60: 8.02, 1/4: 15.44 @ 105.8. Peak HP: 228... This is with the AC on w/ an extra 135, and slight uphill.

Those mph numbers seem awfully optimistic!

Folks... 105 and 109 are REALLY fast, especially for a Mini Cooper without a head, additional power adders, etc.

Even though the drag strip times will average your speed between two points coming up to the traps, 105 is FAST.

Like, faster then a stock 350Z fast.
109? If I remember correctly, C5 vettes would have problems running those trap speeds while stock, unless you have a really good driver behind the wheel.

I have a newman cam, 550cc injectors, Mynes tune and pretty much every bolt on but a head. I constantly get high 90s to low 100s (if it grabs).

You may be right, I need new tires! Still don't know which ones. I need to keep a balance between durability and good grip. Any ideas?

Well I went from the Falken-615s to S-Drives on a whim(had a flat and the tire shop would not fix my tires). I did not really have a choice so I went with the S-drives. It seems that no one on nam likes them, I am only comparing them to the falkens. I really like them. Sticky from the get go. No need for tires to warm up and no tire spin

There are a ton of options.

my iphone has been spot on(within an acceptable range anyways). I made sure to take special care when calibrating, and I also took my car to a truck scale to make sure I wasn't guessing on my weight. I do not believe it reads tilt on your phone. Yes, it uses the accelerometer, but your phone should remain perfectly still in the car and not be dampened..which means to not place it in your seat...nice hard surface that moves with the car is ideal. I went otu and bought a windshield mount. Anyways, I am pretty sure it uses GPS too...if not, it should.

I am sure most of you have seen this, but for those who havent, its worth watching..

Try this: Start dynolicious, and do the timed run. When it says "Go" try tilting the phone back. I was messing around with it awhile back and noticed if I tilt the phone more, the "faster" my car is...

it works pretty well for me. says i put out ~160+ to the wheels
(cai, occ, 15% pully, dt bpv) on the stock s-lites. with no spinning or launching i was getting 15.4ish 1/4mi @ 98mph
and to mushhad, it only used the tilt function (which is the accelerometer, thats how the tilt in the iphone works) no gps is used because the program is spot on for me as well and i have an ipod touch, not the iphone, so no gps for me, yet it still works.

So I just ran a few runs and the best time I got feathering the clutch was:

60' 3.03 sec @ 25.2
330' 7.09 sec @ 58.1
1/8 mi 10.31 sec @ 48.1
1/4 mi 15.41 sec @ 95.3

0-60 7.04 sec
max speed 96.7mph

As you can all see I suck at launching even though I was feathering the clutch. I was launching @ 3000RPM. I could feel how slow the launch was and I still got a little bit of wheel spin. I ran about 80% throttle till about 6000RPM and then WOT to redline on first gear. WOT on second.

When compared to the last best run (I still sucked if you look at the 60' mark at 2.89 sec), I got 0-60 in 6.89 sec and a 1/4 in 15.10 sec at 97.7mph. I was dumping the clutch but I was getting better numbers with an all time best of 0-60 in 6.24 sec and a 1/4 mile in 14.09 at 109mph. According to Dynolicious. Lots of wheel spin!! Still having fun!

I believe someone earlier said that this might use GPS also... If so, then this wouldn't seem to work with an iPod Touch. Got my wife one a while back and this software sounds pretty cool.

While it seems it might not be spot-on, so long as it's consistent, I'd be quite happy.

Been running Paradas for the past 5 years. Awesome tire, however this year I switched over to the S Drives. WOW, this tire does everything the Paradas do with less road noise and better wet traction. The Paradas are great, but the S Drives are a little better IMO. Just some food for thought for you.

I just got this app for my phone a few days ago and I love it, I also have been getting random numbers, but not every run was perfect so I can see why.

I just decided to just take the vehicle average results and go with them, the HP looks really accurate for a bone stock mini, averaging 172

60' 3.05 sec @ 25.6 MPH
330' 7.32 sec @ 55.2 MPH
1/8 mil 10.73 sec @ 72.9 MPH
1000' 13.66 sec @ 81.7 MPH
1/4 MIL 16.22 SEC @ 84.7 MPH

0-60 7.96 sec

Those numbers look pretty right to me, especially for a stock R56. I'm glad you are enjoying the iPhone apps.

I don't have enough time to do a 1/4 mile run in my Cooper. But it came up with 98hp at the wheels, which seems about right.

I've also been playing with Harry's GPS Lap Timer on the track. It's a little flaky, but not hopeless. On race tires (Toyo RA1) I got sustained 1.1G in the corners and peaks of 1.33G

The accelerometer in the iPhone calculates the hp by the following:

Force = mass X acceleration (hence you need to provide it with the mass of car+driver)

Work = force X distance

Power = work / time

So assuming the weight that you enter is correct, then in theory it should be giving you the actual power that you are putting to the ground to make the car accelerate. So if your launches are poor (you spin the wheels) and/or inconsistent, then the iPhone will be calculating a different HP from what you may have gotten from a dyno, say.

When you say it is "not giving an accurate reading" what are you comparing it to?

Anyone tried DynoStorm yet. It's an app developed by BunsenTech (who wrote Dynolicious) and runs on the Blackberry Storm. Just released a couple of weeks ago.

We use the Yoko Parada Spec II over here quite a lot and I've witnessed 2.0 60fts at the drasgstrip with them (215 40 17)

On 195 50 15's I've gone 2.1 60ft 12.7 at 114 with nitrous and stock head
