100k tune up questions

So, I've reached the 100k mark and believe it's time to replace the plugs/wires. I've narrowed down the plugs to NGK platinums but I'm also thinking of replacing the coil pack with a Screamin Demon from mossmini.com. Has anyone used the Screamin Demon and if so, how did you like it? What plug wires did you use?

Jackson racing from Moss well made wires. I have the platinums not sure I would go back to them, I would stay with the stock plugs just becuse and save a few bucks. As for the coil if your not racing with more boost stay with the stock one. I have read more problems with aftermarket coils and they go back stock and it fixes the problem.

Alta has an ignition upgrade package that includes an MSD coil. I've had good experience with MSD products in other applications and would personally go with this if I were to replace my coil. I have no experience with the Screamin' Demon coil.

I just replaced my wires with Magnecore 8.5 mm. I've had good luck with Magnecore in my other cars; well made, lots of tech support and little hype. Ian

Sorry to come in lacking enthusiasm, but are you experiencing problems that indicate you need a new coil, wires and plugs? I would get Brisk plugs from RMW especially if you have any mods and drive in a spirited fashion. The stock coil is just fine, but doesn't stand out like the red MSD, and the stock plug wires are recommended over many aftermarket plug wires as being risk free.

over and out,

No worries!!

My Coop is bone stock, so this would be my first real 'mod'. The only reason I was interested in the coil pack was to try something new; though my current set-up is fine.

I too am a High mileage car...
I have the Screamin Demon, and yeah I like it, dont know if it does much but if your gonna replace your coilpack, why not upgrade. I think i got the cobalt wires that moss mini sells and I am running NGK one step colder Iridiums.

What "upgrade"?
I had the "Screamin Demon" coil pack. Did nothing but lighten my wallet.
MSD coil puts out the same voltage as stock coil, so the only extra there is the "bling" factor.

Just my 3 cents.......(inflation!)

Same here. I noticed no difference after adding the Screamin Demon so it was sold and the stocker went back on, same with wires. Brisk plugs are nice though

So you are at a 100k and you are just worried about your plugs and wires ? Get oem wires and the oem coil. If you have no mods, then you should be okay with NGK plugs.

Howbout :
Fuel Filter, Intake Filter, Cabin Filter, Coolant Flush, Trans Oil, Changing Oil, Engine Mounts , Control Arm Bushings, Power Fluid flush, and I am sure a couple more things I can't think of now.

Coolant, Oil change and Air Filter done @ 95k (i was late on my 90k srvc). The problem I'm running into w/the others (mounts & bushings) is there is NO ONE is the Lansing/East Lansing that will work on MINI's. I either have to trek west to Grand Rapids (Sharpe MINI), the Detroit area or just have it done @ my normal dealer (Cincinnati MINI). Any recommendations for brand of mounts/bushings?

For bushings you can go with Powerflex control arm bushings, and the rest you can replace them with OEM if you do not want the extra vibration and etc in your cabin.

The fuel filter cost me $32, and it's very easy to change. I strongly urdge you to change that. There is also an easy DIY here on NAM.

I think I'm just going to pick up a set of the blue OEM wires from Morristown and the Brisk plugs -- then call it a day. Now if I were mechanically inclined, I'd try to do this myself - but sadly, I'm not, so I guess it's off to the dealer.

Cert Mini Tech Let me chime in. 100K all you need is plugs and cheap insurance replace all the wires. I have been replacing wires on high mile cars now. Starting to see real time mis fires. The plugs jan have are good. But if your not running pulleys or go fast items. I was go with stock. But please. No platinum ours engines do not like these plugs. I have to change them out all the time for OEM. I am personal friends with Jan and do work for him @ times or his clients @ my dealership. I run Nipondeno irridium IK22's
they work great for my set up,Jan tune/ 15% pulley /Borla sport exhaust /and and JCW injectors and JCW high flow airbox. so if your really not modded out
I Would go with stock wires. and coil thats why I run with my OEM blue wires
stock intercooler. I make 210 HP 200 FT torque. Not alot but I am happy with it.

Thanks for the input!! What are your personal thoughts on the Brisk plugs and OEM wires? As said before, my Cooper is bone stock and I'm finally to the point where I want to have a little fun - as much as you can on a phD student budget.

I'll add:

-Super Charger lube: Check this ASAP, you are in the range where the SC is at risk for grenading on the water pump side due to lack of fluid.

-Check Ball joints
-Check rear control arms
-Brake fluid flush (depends on last change)

This is a good place to start on learning about the SC.

At 100k miles on my 03 Cooper, I did OEM plugs and wires, brake line flush and new stainless steel brake lines. Installing a new exhaust this week, mostly because the hangers on the muffler are rotted away. In a month or so, I'm going to have the coolant flushed, bushings, control arms checked out.

Poco runs better than new BTW

Try this site for your mileage reset: http://www.soopercooperinfo.com/

About the coolant flush (previous post - above) does anyone know if the Redline coolant additive or the Royal Purple additive is worthwhile? The salesman at my local auto store said that they are for high performance vehicles. But then, so is Redline oil and Royal Purple oil as well and I use both in my Mini (oil and trans.) and I have seen a big improvement. Since I live in a somewhat warm climate (Phoenix) I was thinking that one of these products might be worth checking into.

Any Thoughts?

Im a little over 100k now and my SC just took a dump, so definitely check to make sure it still has plenty of fluid in it! Cause that is one costly repair I wish I didnt have to make.
