I just got the JCW kit added to my MINI. and i am very Happy with it so far. I can not help but wonder if an intake would add some more fun via less restricted breathing. I'll hang up and wait for your answers.

I also have JCW and an H&R Typhoon intake and air box mods ala Randys How to. I did the intake mod pre JCW and immediately noticed a seat of pants difference. The holes in the air box allow a sweet gasping sound not unlike the sound my wife emits as she rides in the seat next to me and I don't warn her that I am going to, in her words, "drive like an idiot". The sound of the MCS gulping much needed O2 is music to some of our ears. The supercharger whine is also much more audible but only when you stand on the throttle and "drive like an idiot".

I would go for the upgrade and enjoy the sights, sounds and g-force.

I think i will give it a try. I can hear the supercharger at idle now and i open my windows and sunroof in the garage to enjoy the symphony of the new exhaust and supercharger whine. Maybe the CO is getting to me but I enjoy it.

 

At idle? What are you hearing (supercharger-wise) at idle???

 

When the engine is cold it will idle for a very short time at 11 or 1200 rpm. The power steering motor has a whine also but they are different. after the idle drops to around 900 it gets pretty quiet and then its time to motor.

Out of four JCW kits installed so far at my dealership they have in two cases also added a cold air intake AND
exhaust header such as the Mini mania with sport cat and the results of the JCW kit with intake and header was a very noticable improvement over the JCW kit alone.

Lets pause and think about this result? Less restrictive air intake (alta with hose would be my choice)- much better than stock or drop in filter AND exhaust header that improves exhaust flow (mandrel bends, less restrictive, longer primaries, 4-2-1 or 4-1 design, no cat or sport cat and 2.5 inch diameter pipe leading to upgraded JCW exhaust.

I don't think you can go wrong with this upgrade. It just makes the JCW kit that much better. Mini Mania header might sound louder while the London stainless/Milltek header is likely to give minimal additional loudness but as much as 6 to 12 HP more power at low to mid range rpms.

I asked the tech guy at the dealership where I had my JCW installed about what he would do next for an extra bump up in perfomrnace and he said he would go for an intake. So that's what I will be doing next, but I am waiting to see BFP's intake that's supposed to be ready this December.

Your MCS will be screaming along once you do those installs!!! Once done, drive carefully and sign up for driving school when you get a chance. You'll have gobs of power to spare- bring on those heavy wheels now! No problem.

 

I run the Alta box and filter (sans hose) with a Borla SS exhaust on my JCW and yes, it helps. This set-up helps the engine breathe a little better and thus increases the power. (and yes the whine is GREAT at WOT!!!)

 

First - You guys have awesome dealerships if they are open minded to mods. Mine warned me that my warranty will expire if I change even the air cleaner.

Second - Where can I get an Alta Box and Filter for a good price.

Third - How about the header and high flow cat - Where is the best place to buy them as well.

I have looked at a ton of sites for parts and honestly I just want to find a reputable one. I admittedly do not know a lot about where to buy stuff for mini's. I do know a ton of places for my RX-7 but thats not helping me now is it?? :smile:

 

Question: I too have the Works kit & run a BMP intake (which seems to be nothing more than a K&N filter sitting in the bottom 1/2 of the stock intake box w/ a shiny BMP 1/2 cylinder top.) My guess is the BMP design is one of the least effective?
-Supersprint Headers: Can one expect to pass a state sniff test (Cal. or Tex.) w/ such a unit ? I plan to keep the JCW exhaust & run the SS system up to the center resonator. Also, does anyone run the Supersprint set-up?
-Finally, my Cooper dealer & Works installer was not very happy about the prospect of headers (warranty concerns) but are OK w/ my other mods (Brembo brakes, H&R springs, BMP intake, tower bars & sway bar.) Why? Will headers require constant tightening/re-torquing or present special risks?

All these upgrades can be done through Webbmotorsports- you can call and talk to RandyBMC first and get your quesitons answered. He can price match anything out there. London stainless header with cat about $899 and alta intake with hose about $259. You can shop around. The header is in short supply and is made in the UK. Randy has how to instructions on his website.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I will keep an eye on some of the mod update reports. there seems to be a consensus on the Miltek header, maybe I will start there. This is going to be fun!!!
