Again, a ton of interest in the intercooler options a few months ago, with everyone promising that they were going to purchase one as soon as they came out. Has anyone in the entire MCO board besides Randy put either the Alta or the Webb Motorsports intercooler on their car? I have only seen one post so far. Randy do you have any dyno's? The numbers seem vague right now with some wide variations (I know some of that is due to the outside conditions). What is the torque gain between the two? What is the seat of the pants feel? Is this a worthwhile mod? Seems way more beneficial than an exhaust with the gains of 9 or more hp, plus less stress on the engine and not much more than some of the exhausts out there (i.e. UUC). Also, does anyone have any information to address Coopertino's concerns about pressure drop? Alta states that their intercooler is over 40% larger in internal volume. They are also stating 9-11hp and 5-7ft/lbs of torque with a pulley car across the entire band? Is this what you are seeing as well, Randy? This is quite significant, and not a whole lot less than what the addition of a pulley provides to a base car. Add this and the Cryo system that Bisch has on his car, and it could really add quite a bit to the system.

No, I haven't seen those numbers, as unless you have a dyno in the wind tunnel, you couldn't see those numbers. What we are doing is measuring outlet temp and pressure, then going from there. That way, it is an apples to apples comparison.

Measuring the stock unit and the Alta unit, the thickness of the Alta is actually slightly less than the stock unit, which again is a way to keep the pressure up while still increasing surface cooling area.

There are so many considerations when determining the effectiveness of either type of intercooler, and I think they have been covered ad nauseum. Are you using the car for drag racing, autocross, road racing, street driving? What is the typical ambient temp you operate in? Is weight a significant concern? Is installation? Etc.

I'd be happy to discuss these issues with anyone, but it takes a good length conversation to cover all the bases. I have installed at least four of the big Altas, and two of the water-airs. There are other folks with them somewhere!

Seat of the pants - yes, especially on a colder day. Dyno results - more so on the water-air which is MUCH less dependent on air flow.

Hope that helps!

Randy

the pressure drop across the intercooler is a function of the cross section area and length. longer path, more drop, larger area, less drop. the result of a thinner but wider intercooler could be larger area than stock. More importantly, the nature of the internal pathways compared to stock would have to be considered. The manifold pressure is what is left after the pressure drop through the intercooler, so the idea is to minimize the pressure drop in the intercooler, which I'm sure is what Randy meant. ("Measuring the stock unit and the Alta unit, the thickness of the Alta is actually slightly less than the stock unit, which again is a way to keep the pressure up while still increasing surface cooling area.&quot

Can somone answer what boost pressure they are getting with their Alta Intercooler with a simular setup as follows.

Rogue intake
Magnaflow Exhaust
15% pulley
Alta Intercooler

My boost reads at most 13PSI.

With your setup Randy what does yours make?
