Drivetrain oil coolers
oil coolers
I was at a two-day event, on two different tracks. On the faster of the two, I spotted my oil temps at or above 150C at the drain plug (factory MINI VDO oil temp guage) which in Farenheight is approximately 318+. I am using Mobil 1 10W30, but I normally use 15W50 for track season and do not have this problem (I also use an intercooler water squirter, which dramatically cools the intake charge, but was down during this event) The outside temp was about 75F of anyones curious.
Does anyone who tracks their cars prefer any of the Mini aftermarket oil coolers, or is there anyone who has made their own (with a moroso core, or similar)? Also i'd like to know where people measure their temps from, because if I am seeing 320 at the drain plug, its got to be hot enough to break down in the crankcase.
Thanks in advance

I have a custom set up Setrab 7 row oil cooler. It has Aeroquip hose & fittings, a 200ºF Canton thermostat, and the adapter plate from my old Cobalt brand oil cooler.
There should be a thread about it somewhere around here. I can get some more up to date photos for you.
Oh, my oil temp sender is from the drain plug. The highest temps I've seen with this setup were about 260ºF, which was the max that my guage can display. Ambient temps were about 104ºF and I was going flat out to redline in first and second. Ah, the temps quickly cooled down to about 230ºF. They stabilize around 210-220ºF no matter the temp really, thanks to the thermostat.
I never had a temp guage without an oil cooler, so I'm not sure if it even did anything. I got it because I think they are cool.
