Flywheel question

I've got my flywheel out and haven't experienced this design before. I can rotate the inner part pretty easily for about 20 degrees an then it "grabs" Should it be doing this?

That doesn't sound to good. My stock flywheel didn't do that after I removed it! Was it making funny noises in the miles leading up to removal or was the clutch just past its due date?

I've got a good used flywheel for sale in the marketplace. PM me if you need it!

you can usually rotate the friction face section of the dual mass flywheel while holding the ring gear section a little, but 20 degrees sounds like a bit much.

Some rotation is normal. The Mini flywheels are of similar enough design to the dual-mass VAG flywheels that you could use their inspection specs as a guideline. Warpage < .015" and free motion < 9.75mm at the outermost edge. Anything beyond that and its time for a new flywheel.

Dual mass are nice for driveability, but will never hold up compared to the springs loaded in the clutch plate. I've replaced plenty of dual mass fly's over to single solid flywheels in VAG's (vw & audi) as well as the MINI.

Just replace the flywheel....too much work to pull the tranny back out.

Sounds like yet another broken factory dual-mass flywheel.

As much as I dis-like reviving an old thread, I have a relevant question.

I am approaching 60k on my '06 MCS. I am getting a distinct, quick "eek" when I let off the accelerator. I am also getting some chatter/shutter when engaging the clutch. I assume that this is the flywheel (and/or disk).

My question is this: how long will this continue before catastrophic failure?
I don't have $800 - $1k to replace it at the moment. Esp after having to buy an ECU in Feb.
It is a daily driver. I do know how to drive a clutch as all my vehicles (since 15) are standards. This will be the first car I have been forced to replace pre-maturely (before 100k+ mi).
