Clean your intercooler

I just spent the day tearing the front off our MCS JCW to clean our IC out and it is the best thing I have done for performance. As our cars have a crankcase breather that joins the induction pipe just before the turbo, they suck a lot of oil in. When i pulled the IC out the inlet side wasn't too bad as the oil is blown through the core, but the outlet side was coated in oil with a nice little puddle in the outlet tank stretching up the boost tube. I would hate to think how many of those little tubes and fins inside were blocked. Also oil lining the inside of the IC will not allow efficient heat conduction. While I had it out I also took part in some mind numbing activity and sat there with a small flat tip screwdriver and straightend out the multitude of IC fins that had been bent by rocks and road debris (not to mention the stuff that was still stuck in there). The result is what appears to be a lot more power (actually just found what I have gradually lost) and a lot better response with less turbo lag. Added to this the fuel consumption seems to have improved too, so all good. The only down side is it has stuffed my tyres, they don't grip anymore and the traction control light keeps flashing. It is a bugger of a job but well worth doing.

How many miles and driving style would you say are on your car?

I have noticed a small dollip of oil sitting just inside the turbo inlet everytime I remove the tid. I think its all coming from the valve cover breather.

R56 with JCW tuning kit and 20 000 miles. Driven mostly normal day to day driving with a good percentage of open highway getting an average of 43mpg. It does get a reasonable number of "spirited" drives along some excellent mountain roads which is why I bought the worlds fatest road legal go cart.

So in other words, not thrashed every day but I do enjoy the performance and it does see its share of wide open throttle.

A catch can is an excellent idea, problem is where to put it as there is no room under the hood.

I doubt they're too big, they just need to be run somewhere in between the valve cover and the intake tube.

I have one installed on my car right now, but it's only installed because I was getting detonation on low octane gas, and I don't have a ping sensor to change the timing, as this is an obd1 car.

They're well worth it. I suggest buying it and finding somewhere to put it.

What type of catch can did you use and where is it mounted? I agree with you completely and I am very interested to see have you have solved this issue.

I used to use a Gatorade bottle. Worked great. Looked ghetto tho.

Anything with a clear plastic tube from the valve cover vent to the bottle will work. Any hydraulics fitting store will have the air lines for it.

http://www.c-speedracing.com/howto/c...n/catchcan.php

a good link on how to build one up and install it.
