Do I need the belt tensioner tool when changing my pulley?

I'm about to swap my pulley so I have a question... Do I need the belt tensioner tool? Is there any tricks or "workarounds" to do the swap without the tool? I already got the pulley removal tool, the belt and the 15% Mini Madness pulley, but every single thread I've found is posting the swap utilizing the tool. Help, please???

Unless you have some mad fabricating skills, you will need to borrow or buy the tool. It is good to have if you plan on keeping the car a while, it makes the replacement of future belts easy.
