Drivetrain Rattling ALTA R56 Intake?
Rattling ALTA R56 Intake?
I have noticed that a few people have had problems with their ALTA intake rattling. This partly stems from the slightly different design of the late '07 builds forward, versus the early '07 builds. The factory intake changed slightly, in respect to the intake filter housing mounting, including the location of the holes. ALTA designed their intake by the configuration of the early '07 builds, and the intake may rattle on the late '07 and later builds. I had this problem, but it really was a simple solution. The intake needs to be isolated with the factory intake rubber grommets, but the late builds, with their slightly wider hole spacing, causes the ALTA intake to sit off-center of the rubber grommets, causing them to compress only on one side. Also, ALTA provided regular hex nuts for the bolting, and when tightened securely enough to keep them from coming loose, caused the rubber grommet to extrude on one side, causing a rattle between the intake manifold and the ALTA intake. In this case, the intake installation needs two things:
1) an additional flat washer between the ALTA intake and the rubber grommet, which will allow compression over the full surface of the grommet, and
2) the replacement of the regular hex nut with a nylon insert lock nut, which will allow tightening the nut to compress the rubber grommet, but will not vibrate loose. This was a simple fix, and I have not had any more problems. I am fully satisfied with the performance of the ALTA intake.
Please view the attached PDF, if your intake rattles. Add the additional flat washers as shown, and replace the nuts with nyloc nuts. Tighten the bolts until the rubber grommet compresses slightly, but do not overtighten, you will ruin the rubber grommet if you do. This will alow the ALTA intake to shake as necessary due to motor vibration, but not rattle.

I got rattle!
It just started getting bad this week. I have an early 07 build. It's the cold air hose banging against something beneath. The L bracket that holds the filter and hoses in place flexes. This has been aggrivated by the addition of the Alta PnP ECU. The engine shakes more at idle and low RPM. I'm not sure what the solution is but I'll be tinkering with it this weekend.

Hey guys. On some cars, be sure that you remove the hard line from the valve cover going toward the firewall from the stay on the fresh air tube. This can cause a small annoying rattle. Not all cars have it though. So check yours.
Also, on earlier kits we sent out, they do not have the option to remove the sound generator. But the later kits come with the option in the box. Depending on how the ALTA air box is mounted, you can get a slight interference to the sound generator. This can be simply removed.
Hope that helps. Let me know if I can help further!

I had two problems I resolved this weekend...
My old style CAI foam filter (the fatter one that the foam doesn't separate from the metal mesh inside) was damaged from overtorquing and not seated right so it was kinda touching the throttlebody.
The bolts holding the L bracket that keeps the whole intake in place had loosened. They are tough to torque well since they seat in those big rubber grommets used for the original airbox.
The main rattling came from a part of the old airbox underside mount that remains right behind where the fresh air feed connects to the L bracket. That was banging up against something that stuck out from the firewall.
Once everything was torqued and the newer style filter was installed, the rattles, rough starts, and rough idles went away (and to think I was blaming the PnP ECU!). The difference is just magic!!
