Drivetrain Nitrous, how much can my mini take?
Nitrous, how much can my mini take?
I've got a 2002 mini with about 40k miles on it. I'm in the navy so it's not even driven for 6 months of the year.
It has a pully, upgraded intercooler, chip, intake, exhaust. . .
overall i'm pleased with the engine performance, however, I have an older brother with a 350z with intake, exhaust, chip, and some other basic mods.
I we always go to the track and race when i'm home, good old brotherly sport, anyway, I want to really spank him, and a few other people.
I was thinking nitrous woudl do the trick. My question is how much is the max that won't harm my engine (i want the car to last till 100k if possible)
The nitrous might be used 6 times a year.
So recomend something and what is the likely hood of a nice big shot with my around 200hp spanking the Z and other cars in it's category.

We used to run the " big " nozzle on one of our cars with no issues . That was good for about 110 hp . I am sure others have done more . When you say track I am assuming you are talking drag racing . We did have one customer use his , over our objections I might add, on a road course with less than desireable results. All you would need in addition to the kit is larger injectors if you were running any bigger than say the 60 hp nozzle. You can read more about it here .

yeah, it's drag racing, done on at englishtown raceway in nj :D I'd just lvoe to see the look on my brothers face when my mini instead of falling behind rips ahead. and it woudl certainly be fun when all those ricers with there turbos go after me taht i can run them good to, if not beat them, certainlly keep up, i know our cars are more for autocross and such, but sometiems you do just go in straight line
Don't go with a "Dry" nitrous system, too dangerous. I know the venom has so called fail safe, but it is impossible to guarantee that you are always going to have the right nitrous to fuel ratio.
With a wet system you are always going to have the right ratio by using jets and install a fuel pressure cut-off, so if for any reason you loose fuel pressure the system will shut down.
I highly encourage you to look into a NX wet kit. The weakest link in the system is going to be your stock clutch and pistons. I have a good source that makes pistons that will handle high loads of nitrous.
Look up Paul Webster and send him a PM, he has a lot of experience with nitrous, stock mini's and drag racing.

I agree a wet system would always be superior in performance though more dangerous with regards to fuel fires as you are plumbing the pressurized gas system. I was just mentioning our system as one way to go but to date we have not had a malfunction due to NOS with the exception of the one guy that went on a road course with it. The system costs about $800 and takes a good 3 to 4 hrs to install. I do not know what is involved with a true wet system with that regard. Paul would be a good guy to talk to, do your research and spray away

True Randy...but what's nice with the mini is that you can actually screw right into the fuel rail, unlike other imports where it requires the user to cut the high pressure fuel line and intall a "T" fitting with hose clamps. With the NX kit, it's 18" of stainless steel braided hose from the fuel rail to the solenoid and then 12" more braided hose to the injector. (make sure you install the injector AFTER the intercooler) NX also has a guarantee leak free system, if installed as per their directions.
