Drivetrain Most Useable Power in a mini?
Most Useable Power in a mini?
Ok, in lurking on NAM i have developed dreams of grandeur in the form of gooey gobs of horse power. You all know what i am talking about
.
My question, what is a the practical maximum horsepower for a mini that is daily driven year round? (im in pittsburgh so cold 20deg and a foot of snow to 90deg and humid with rain)
I want to have fun and god knows HP is fun, but at what point does it become difficult to control in rain or snow even with the correct rubber?
i don't want to put anyone down there are some awesome high hp mini but all of you are in warmer drier climates and have pockets deeper than mine. I'm just looking to set my sights on something that is realistically controllable, monetarily feasible, but still fast. (i know fast is relative so use your best judgment)
I think that all makes sense.

The guys in Helix in Philly have personal cars that I'm sure have been built to what could be called standard and than some ie-pulley, intake, exhaust, tune, blah, blah, blah. With that, depending on how extreme said components are, anywhere from 200-230+ at the wheels I'd say. The one guy has a great story of him and a 911 on the highway with one of their cars.
And that's in Philly, not the best rodways by far. You really can't put a maximum on HP as far as daily driver goes. Winter comes and I'm sure there's some sick nasty MINI's on Blizzaks somewhere. Like you said, it's money and what are you willing to compromise. If I had to give a number, I'd say stick between 190 and 230 at the wheels. More than enough to have fun, shut down a lot of cars, and still retain all driveability of a stock car.

I don't think it's a question of "maximum hp for the street" but what feels good for the car to you. There will be people who come along and say that a 300whp MINI is fine in the snow.. I think there's a point at which enough is enough. (And that's past it.) You gotta go for balance overall, because there will always be someone else with deeper pockets.
If it wasn't wrong wheel drive my limits would be a lot higher.
