remapping ECU ?

Hi NAM members,

I have MC JCW 06. I want to remap the ECU, I talked to Jan (RMW) to remap the ECU he said I'm sorry you have to bring your car to me because he do the tune on the Dyno but I live outside America.

What should I do to remap the ECU? do you prefer to me Unichip ? and which company is the best for mapping the Unichip ?

Actually the UNICHIP may be just the answer for owners of 07 and newer Minis.
Check with ALTA.

For earlier MINIs I would go with a custom tune, if you are no where near a custom tuner then either move or enjoy what you already have.

Check around, you might find tuners in your area (foreign countries to USA) that would be willing to take a stab at it. Many countries have good Mini clubs, etc that have contacts for you.

Try to find someone more local to you who is doing custom tuning. (Yeah, it'll probably be hard.) Otherwise you're probably limited to a tune-in-a-can. There are no "open source" paths for MINI owners.

I've seen few people happy with their UNICHIP on the R53. I have seen quite a few go up for sale after custom tuning was done. The UNICHIP is attractive on paper, but real world results are lacking.. To say the least.

Would RMW come to Europe? I think here is many of people interested in his tuning.

Germany for example.

A "canned" tune can never be as good as a custom one. That, and from seeing the Unichip firsthand I have to say it's garbage.

Can't speak for Jan, but I think there's a bit of a price difference in domestic flights vs. international. That, and exchange rates aren't too friendly right now. I would imagine he'd have to charge nearly 2-3 times more to have the same margins.

What your describing I refer to a a generic tune - some call it a canned tune. Its a tune they have developed from cars w/ similar mods. Your car will improve but never to the point of a custom tune. Other generic tunes are MTH and GIAC. No tuner wants to hurt a car so the generic tune is always more conservative.

Aren't there also differences in fuels as well as emission standards compared to the US?

Unichip seems to accomplish little for the R53 - seems to be the NAM consensus.

I would suggest that you

a) contact Roland from GTT (U.K.)
b) join the euro board - Mini2?
c) contact MTH based out of germany? While they sell generic tunes perhaps if you went to see them?

I would make a trip to Europe if I knew how to tune the ECU...You should try to contact Jan, I'm sure if you set up enough of mini's and found a dyno pack he would come. Forget MTH, Darren is an r-tard.

Also they're are a lot of happy GIAC tuned mini owners. You would have to send your ECU to someone like Helix in the US to get that done. GIAC is good for everything up to Head work....after that you will need a custom tune to get full benefit.

I hope that helps!

I ran GIAC for sometime and was happy until I got a custom tune.

Just no comparison BUT if you can't get custom then its still better than stock.

MTH canned tune allows you to upgrade your tune for free within a year, and you can also restore the ECU to its virgin state if necessary.

You hook up a PC with special cable, copy the code to the PC, then send it by email to MTH. They send you new code, and you upload into the car using the same cable.

No canned tune can be as good as good dyno-based tuning, but unless you are racing, you won't miss those last 5 HP or so...

See their vendor forum for more information.

suggested requirements (i.e. what it will take to get Jan to Europe).

1) concord tickets
2) 24 hour assistant / translator with a nice set of (.y.) .
3) a swank hotel

Check with Lucky Dog garage i know a while ago people were shipping their ECU's to them with a full parts list and getting a tune. Granted it's not as good as getting your car on the dyno but it's a tune none the less. And it was still claimed to be better than a unichip.
