Drivetrain Headers, should I get them??
Headers, should I get them??
Hi guys, I was thinking on changing my JCW Headers. I would like to buy good quality headers, what would you recomend me?. Do you think I would notice the difference, is it worthy?. I don´t care about noise, I care about Hp or torque.
Thanks a lot.
Ricky.
MINI JCW (210hp), Alta V2 Intercooler, Oil Catch Can, Alta Intake System V2,SuperSprint Centre Pipe, JCW GP (218hp) re-map, Alta Short Shifter, M7 16% pulley, Galfer Evolution Kit (Brakes).
Thanks a lot.

Well , I would like to keep the JCW in case something happens, anyway it would be difficult.. I´m from Spain.. ha ha ha
. What other brands do you remomend me, I know that OBX is really cheap, but I prefer to waste a little mora and meay be get something that could be better.
The JCW 210 kit came with a cat-back exhaust, but not a header...the stock header is retained. If you want the most power from an exhaust, you'll want RMW's expertly designed and fabricated merge collector header. It's the best header on the market for the MINI to-date. That's my advice.

Yet $1200 for a header is sometimes tight....$800 more than that, and you've got a full head. Not saying the price is unjustified, just that I think a bigger gain/cost can be had with the head over a header.

The OP asked about exhaust. Since he already shelled coin for the JCW cylinder head I'd imagine he'd be a bit reluctant to spend money on that line item again. That said, a good cylinder head [i.e. Thumper or RMW] is markedly better than the JCW. After that a good ECU tuning is where I'd go.

Sorry Im not to much into this so I´m sure that I´m wrong. So what about RMW, do they have a webpage?. When I write about header, I mean the collector header, sorry If I didn´t write evrything right. Would you change it?. What kind of changes would I see on my car?. What about doing a re-map without the collector header is it worthy, now that you know what I have in my JCW.
You mean like this?
This is the ONLY tuned header for the Mini
we have them for different cylinder heads, one even for the JCW head

If I had an extra $1,200 to spend I might buy one even if I didn't have a MINI, 'cause it's such a beautiful piece of work! Just goes to show once again that form and function should never have to be mutually exclusive.
What is the purpose of the bolt/jam nut going at the collector interface? Length tuning? Is there one for each of the four header pipes?
Do you have any experience with, or thoughts on, "Anti-Reversion" devices? I know a guy who runs an exhaust shop in San Diego who swears by them, but mostly works with V6 or V8 engines. Would an anti reversion pipe provide any benefit on a MINI?

it's to keep the interchangeable collector on. We have found by changing the collector we can change the torque band of the power curve. What we strive for with our headers is an extremely long power band at the expense of a "peak" number. As you can see from our track times it plays a part in keeping a longer power curve which results in faster times.
We always ran anti reversion cones on our Big Block chevy's in the old days but we never had collectors as fine as these. Our headers have equal length primaries and much time was spent on sizing and length. Even the degree of neckdown in the collector was analized. I don't want to go too much into it as many $$$$ were spent perfecting this and giving it away is not something I want to do. Also... I doubt anyone will spend the money making this collector anyway as there is no profit in making something this good for such a cheap price
So maybe my secret is safe....
I have started on a new collector for the stroker engine as the 1.6L big valve head collector is a little too peaky for my taste on the stroker. There goes more $$$ down the drain in my search of perfection
That's hot.

If someone were to purchase your complete exhaust system for a JCW head and later upgraded to one of your RMW heads how would that effect the exhaust system? Would the collector be able to be changed for the new head? Are their any other differences in the exhaust system between the two heads?
Thanks, Steve

the main difference between the 2 collectors for the 1.6L engine is the one for the JCW head/stock head gives torque lower in the curve than the one for the big valve head. We designed them this way because the stock valve heads won't produce the flow on the high RPM band. This gives us a distinct advantage onthe track as the meat of the powerband is where you are driving the car most of the time.
for those with a JCW head/stocker might want to talk to newbs49 as he has this system on his car and it was tuned at the last Helix day. He took it to the track and might be able to give you a clue how it did vs the other cars there.
The low end torque with Jan's header on the track is awesome. I had the car on the track with Mini's that had plenty of mods. These cars could not stay close coming out of turns. The low end pull is right there when you get on the gas. My GP is stock except for the header, exhaust and tune Jan put on the car. If you want quality look at Jan's header.

Thanks Larry....
wait til you put the Cross coilovers on next!
You coming out to Helix in January?
I'd like to come out, but the car is sleeping for the winter. I'm leaning toward the head first now. But who knows. I really like the Cross setup too. Maybe I'll win some Lottery money!!!!!! Ya - Good Luck
Working on a tune session in Buffalo area for spring. April - early May.

sounds good, as I want to come out to the area and hit some tracks on the east coast... this will make it easier to justify the trip to the Mrs.!!!!
No doubt the RMW makes a SUPER header and in a leage of its own but if you don't have the budget, I bet even Jan would tell you that the OBX is not a bad little header for 200 bucks.
Of course I could be wrong - lol

Nope.. you are right...
I have told many people that are on budgets that it is an acceptable way of going. It will not compete on the track though as it's a peaky header, also there have been quality issues but for $200 you can buy 6 of them.... minus the labor of removing them....LOL
Larry
If you get a tune session in the spring you can put my name in. I was just thinking of doing this in Syracuse but if you have some plans in Buffalo I'll come there.
(P.S. I sent you a pm a while back but never got a response)
