Magnaflow makes one that tapers in the middle in 2 1/4. It was the only thing that worked for me!

Why not contact Alta and ask about a replacement resonator for their cat back exhaust?

If not, you can make it a straight pipe or keep the old pipe and weld in a replacement resonator.

See
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/muffler4.htm
http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Upgrade/Exhaust.htm

Measure the pipe diameter then add a resonator
http://www.sfxperformance.com/catalo...ors/page_1.htm

Of course your generic resonator was never designed for your Alta muffler so no one has any idea how it will perform- better same or worse than before and no one knows how it will sound either.

It will be a surprise.

And I thought I was the only one with this kind of luck-I have the ALTA exhaust amd noticed a rattle that would never go away. I took it in today and I was told that the resonator was "broken." The dealer told me it would cost $1006 w/o shipping and install. I'm very interested in any information on this topic.

$1006 dollars seems to be a little odd for a resonator...I had center resonator removed on my Volt cat back might be a little cheaper to remove it them to pay 1006$....

I would also suggest just removing the resonator for a pipe welded in...seems to burble and pop alot more while not making it to loud...i als read somewhere someone gained 2whp? hmmm

i'm considering going straight pipe. dealer claimed price was due to resonator being part of exhaust manifold. Dealers are usually overpriced-parts guy claimed that future smog tests may be jeoparized and it may also trigger engine sensors. others say not to worry.

Dont worry, you dont need the resonator....it is not part of the exhaust manifold/header at all. The only issue you may have is drone without the resonator, thus the name resonator...

Since I've been eying the Alta exhaust, this thread caught my eye. Isn't the resonator part of the Alta, and if so covered by their warranty?

Just got my car done today-resonator gone. The sound is a little louder, but so far not bad. I have not been on the highway, so I'll update you on that sound level. $108 bucks.
