Alta supercharge pulley classic Vs V2

Hi,

I got some question regarding the supercharge pulley for alta. In the www.altaminiperformance.com, I found out that there is two types of supercharge pulley. Up until now i still dun understand what is the difference between both of them.

Classic is a taper fit - tapered base slides onto SC shaft, when hub is bolted onto it, tapered 'prongs' are compressed onto shaft.

V2 base is clamped onto the shaft and hub is bolted to it.

It's pretty much as it says on the website:
ALTA Performance was the first manufacturer to design a two piece , taper fit Mini Cooper Supercharger Pulley. Today, It is the most imitated design on the market. Now we’ve upped the ante with the ALTA Performance™ Version 2.0 Supercharger Pulley with 15%, 17% or 19% reduction. Installation is easier than ever. And results are even more fantastic. The ALTA Performance pulley features a stainless steel supercharger shaft coupler with installation site aperture and the first to offer direct torque technology. Ultra light aluminum body decreases rotational inertia and overall weight. Oversized belt retainers and belt groove teeth increase belt grip. A decorative end cap faceplate provides a clean sleek look.
There's not a big difference either way. It's more marketing than functionality - the V1s work just fine.
Alta claims the V2 has greater shaft grip, but there isn't an issue with V1 pulleys slipping. The new design allows a steel collar and (lighter) aluminum hub, though the rotational mass isn't that much either way. The V2 makes it marginally easier to swap hubs, but that doesn't happen often.
You can't go wrong either way.
Hope that helps.

i wonder why because there is two versions and my technician told is the same. I was thinking if both of them are the same why not they just release one of them.

Thanks again Eric !!

Also, the V2 has the advantage of being able to be used when the supercharger shaft is slightly undersized.

For example, let's say that your old pulley came loose and spun on the shaft, scratching up the shaft. At this point, any replacement pulley would probably have a hard time clamping tightly to the damaged shaft, and would probably come loose as well. At this point, a new supercharger is likely your only option.

You could instead take the supercharger to a machine shop, have a few thousandths of an inch turned off of the shaft to make it smooth again, and then use the Alta V2 pulley, which is designed to clamp tightly even if the shaft is as much as .020" undersized.

I suspect that sooner or later, Alta will lower the price on the V2 pulley slightly and then discontinue the V1 pulley entirely.
