Data acquisition devices
Oh, so no water temp or intake air temp? It would be really cool if there is a track data acquisition system that can capture all the data from OBD2 that a ScanGuage could. All these data would be really helpful on tuning of car, and verify some of the claims by aftermarket parts manufactures.

I've been using the Performance Box for the last 2 years and am quite happy with it. Easy to use, has all the data I can handle, can swap it from car to car easily and affordable.

I wrote up a comparison for Trackpedia.com a few years back on the popular data loggers at the time.
I just wrote up an email for a friend who was interested in data loggers and thought I would share it here.
I only have experience with the Traqmate, but this is the information I learned while researching data loggers before purchasing mine.
Currently there are 3 GPS data logging systems that around $1000. They are the TraqMate, G2X , and DL1 . Each are all great products and each has their strengths and weaknesses. It really depends on what you are looking for and what your priorities are.
If you really want a cool dash display, the G2X comes with a very nice dash display and is included in the base price of $943.
The Traqmate has a simple dash and is only $260 on top of the base price of $739.
The DL1 has a very basic dash for $675 or $965 for a very nice dash display on top of the base price of $965.
All of the systems record speed, track map, position on map, lap times, g-forces (accelerations), etc. All systems also have the ability to add aditional sensors or inputs to log. Some can log additional sensors right out of the box, others require add-ons.
The DL1 can log up to 16 additional sensors right out of the box.
The Traqmate can log 7 sensors, but requires an $80 add on (TraqData input device).
The G2X can log up to 12 additional sensors, but requires the purchase of propriatery 'Vnet' cables for each sensor. Each Vnet cable is $120ea. However the G2X can log RPM right out of the box w/o the need to purchase additional cables.
All of these systems can be used with the TrackVision software that allows you to overlay your logged data onto your videos. The software costs $125 (new version is coming out soon and will cost more). See this video for an idea of what TrackVision can do.
I wanted a system that could record speed, RPM, throttle position, brake application, g-forces, track map, etc and be able to overlay that onto video. A display was not on my list of priorities as I would probably get too distracted by it with my ADD.
I ended up buying the Traqmate Basic Video Bundle with optional TraqData for $975. If I ever wanted to upgrade to a Display it is only $260 more.
If you only want to record speed, rpm, g-forces, track map, lap times, etc, and/or a dash display is important to you, the G2X would probably be better for you.
If you don't care about a display and want to record tons of sensors or inputs, then the DL1 would be the best choice.
If you want to record more than just RPM, but only a few other sensors or inputs, and have the option of a dash, the Traqmate would do that.
All of the systems are very easy to install to gather the basic information. All you need to do is mount the logging unit in the car with velcro or some other secure method, plug in the cigarette lighter, and place the GPS magnet mount on the roof. It is that simple. The system can easily be moved from car to car.
You can either tap into the current vehicle sensors or add your own sensors to log additional sensors/inputs (this would obviously be vehicle specific).
Other things to consider are the recording frequency (5hz, 10hz, 20hz, or 40hz, etc), amount of memory, memory type (external CF Card, or internal memory), amount of recording time, and most importantly software (features, ease of use, flexability/customizability, etc).

O.k. this is just my opinion but for the average person if you Iphone and use windows, bang for buck would be the PLX Devices. Fun, useful, and depending on your need for info pretty much up to imagination. My intention is to read like a race car, but look like a stock car! As far as the more race inspired systems, thats Racing.
