Is the Hawk Black not an option? I use HT10s on my track car but have thought about using Blacks for slower tracks.

Have been using these pads for last two years, Street and Track. And have been very happy with them, bite is very good even when cold. Not the cheapest.

Hawk DTC 70's up front & HPS+ out back for the track.

4 days at the Glen and 2 days at LRP so far and there is still enough pad (up front) that I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. The rears hardly wear at all of course.

Hey folks, are you talking the R4 or the R4S pads from Porterfield?
On my old sports car... the R4s were great for street use, but the R4's would be swapped out for track duty.

Of course, that was on a 3500lb car... just curious if the R4 on the Mini street well or not.

Thanks!
Joe

Very happy with PF97s front and stock rear....the PFs don't chunk as they wear down like all of the Hawks I've previously used did.

I have been waiting for the guys at Hawk to get off of their butts and start putting the material on to a MINI backing plate, but I still am waiting. This is a material that they make, but only put it on to about 10 street pad shapes. They want a commitment of pad sales to start making the combination.

I had obviusly touched a nerve with a few at the beginning, and it appeared like no-one was much interested.

I personally use the Hawk Blue in the front on track, and HPS' in the rear. I have had no issues changing pads at the track, but I do know that people don't like to, for whatever reason.

I have a customer testing the pad out in another shape to see if the pad will be applicable.

i'd like to believe in this miracle pad but just don't see it being a reality. I'd be happy to do some testing for you..... I did 40 days last year and 30 so far in 08. I do use wilwood fsl's up front and stock calipers in the rear. i can tell you that i've mistakenly put my extra street pads on for a track day and glazed them in two laps and had to throw them away. I wish you luck, let me know if i can help.

Carbotech's

We'll going with what's been done before, I tried the Carbotechs. First, they completely screwed up the order. After some serious customer service magic, they made things right, but it was a serious bummer. I'll spare the details.

But, as advertised, they worked phenomenally well. I've never felt the brakes this good .. no fade at all, stopped darn fast too. Loved em on the track.

As advertised, they are SUPER noisy with stock rotors. I have heard that slotted rotors reduce the noise, but that's not an option. The car is almost undriveable on the street. Highway use seems okay, but around town, the screech from the brakes is unreal.

Please make a dual purpose pad. I don't need a free set to test, I'll buy the darn things.

Sorry for the delay

I ran 10s in the front and 8s in the back. Worked like a charm? FWIW, I felt very badly to have not purchased my pads through you. The pads were an early Xmas present, so I didn't buy them myself. Otherwise, I would have definately purchased them from you -- sorry.

Interestingly, apparently the noise is only in the front pads. I've started slowing at Red lights using the E brake. Looks a little funny but it sure is quieter!!!

No worries Dr Phatcity, you'll need another set soon enough.

I wouldn't use that E brake to much. Think about getting a set of 1521 (Bobcats) for just the front and enjoy them between track events and have cleaner wheels too.

The Mini is not my daily driver, so I'm trying to keep from swapping pads. Though I may end up having to do that anyway .... argghhhh. Swapping pads in winter without a garage to work in sucks.

to answer the original question that would be great but lets be real.

I did my first hpde1 event yesterday at msrhouston.

After speaking to dustin at autoXcooper I ordered XP12s for the front and XP10s for the rear. dustin suggested the 12/10 setup because i was running hoosier r6s. I installed them 2 days before the event and I will be taking them off to put the car back to stock in a few days. I can deal with the noise on the road but i don't do much driving around town. just to and from work during the week.

On the track the pads were fantastic. sad part is it was my first hpde in the cooper and I also ran it on hoosier r6s so I have nothing to compare it to.

I'm suprised NASA would let you run R6s in your first DE, or was it just the first DE in the Cooper?

first de ever.

that was my first track event ever but I can tell you it was probably the most relaxed event I will ever attened.

Tech was bull****. All they did was verify that my helmet was sa2005. The tech guy looked at my inspection form and signed off on it. the end. from there it was just show up at the designated time and you're off.

I had a great instructor so my track time was a good learning experience. classroom time was garbage but I wasn't expecting much.

FYI then, if you run any events with TDE you will not be able to use the R6s till you get to the yellow run group. (HPDE 3 for NASA)

Thanks for the heads up. I was planning on running the event at TWS. If that is the case I doubt I will be doing any TDE events.

You will learn more faster without the sticky tires.

Yeah that is true but I'm not going to run on the runflats and if I'm spending money on rubber it might as well be made for the track.

I learned a good amount this weekend on the r6s. I'm not trying to do this professionally... just every two months or so.

Thanks for the recs TXwerks --- you've been very helpful with other questions similar to this one (e.g. tires)

the next set of pads I will try as a dual pad will likely be the Porterfields. (the carbotechs are just too noisy). Which one do you suggest?

Pho,

So, you went out and bought hoosier R6s, a set of carbotechs, and jumped out on the track for your first day. I think that's awesome. You got all the right equipment up front and it will treat you well. If you used brakes that were any less aggressive/grippy than the carbotechs, you certainly would have overheated the brakes (how do I know, I did it with street tires once already - ruined a good set of pads). Those tires can generate tremendous stopping power when paired with good brakes ... hence the suggestion for Carbotech XP12/10.

Some people, I for example, run on performance street tires. Learning how to drive at the limit is a little safer on street tires because grip doesn't drop off suddenly like it does on the R6's. For my application, I might be able to get away with something that would allow for a dual application pad. I tried the carbotechs and they are great on the track, just noisey.

As for your "get real" comment, someone with significantly more track experience than you or I (Txwerks) thinks that there might be a pad that works for both track and DD applications. I'm happy to listen to what other, more experienced people have to say on the topic...

Since it was his 1st Track day and I knew he would be running in the slow group the XP10/8 combo will work fine. I did inform him that once he gets faster that running XP12/10 would be the way to go.
