I use one long tape for the headlamp surrounds, as well as for the arches. The trick lies in how you divide arcs into segments as you tape. Kinda like trying to draw an arc with many short straightlines instead.

I've been thinking more and more about the DVD idea and releasing short, affordable videos on techniques instead of one super long DVD covering everything. The time to release shorter ones would be signficantly less and the ability to pick and choose only the techniques you want might make the videos more useful.

I'll think about this as I get more feedback.

Thanks

Richard

I hate taping too. It just takes so long. All the curved arches mean I have to rip the tape off in 2-3" Lengths to follow the curve. We need to think of a better solution!

I like the idea of shorter videos. While I liked the dvd on using the PC, I really didnt need to know how to do things by hand. Thats not to say I didnt learn anything, but It wasnt all that useful as I dont have any hand polish or wax items at home. And I am all for you being able to get videos out sooner, I like the style of the car wash video. I know they cant all be free, but its easy to access and I have seen it more than once.

this is a good point... i like the idea of short videos, too. and it seems like online distribution would work well for those. like if you have a 5 minute video on taping, people can go to your site and rent access to the video they want (for a certain period of time) and then watch them online through the same kind of technology used for the two bucket car wash video.

i guess the backend technology for this might be too expensive to make it plausible, though. i don't really know enough about it.

Richard - I think the concept of a library of short how-to's is very good. Like your wash video - short and direct. Also if you need to brush up on a item or forgot a technique, pull that file and watch what you need in 10 - 15 minutes. Very efficient, though possibly less financially lucrative you.

Thanks for the feedback. My partner and I had talked long ago of making a library of How-To videos to feature specific makes/brands of cars so owners would see how they could best polish out their own car and not a generic one.

We've also talked about a Techniques DVD covering all the "Must Know" paint polishing stuff in a single place.

Making the videos online for a small fee is something we've talked about but have yet to realize. For example, Google Video where we host our videos has had a beta program in place for well over a year where people could accept small payments to have their videos watched, but the only people that have been allowed to test it were the major studios.

It wouldn't be cost effective for me to set up my own streaming media server, and rent gobs and gobs of bandwidth, so outsourcing it really is the best solution at this time for me.

We do plan to have more short videos available in the future similar to the car wash video, we're just trying to balance how much we can keep doing things for free versus trying to make a little money.

Thanks all!

Richard

People would be much more likely to pay $1 to download a short video than $30 for mailorder a DVD. 30 times more likely? Possibly.

It's kind of like what itunes is doing for music. Will you make the same allowing people just to buy what they want?

Of course itunes allows you to buy the whole thing (album) for less than the sum of its parts so that also encourages that.

But I would recommend it. Find a way to charge a buck or two for a 5-10min download. I would certainly be a repeat customer.

Frankly nothing short of a working tactile holographic OG wielding a PC will do

Short flicks = good idea. You can always compile a long chaptered version or discounted set later on.
