Light Scratches below Boot ... help

Help

I got some very light scratches on that flat surface where you would load stuff into the boot (I got to get one of those protectors). I know its from loading stuff into the boot.

They are not deep at all, you have to look for them to see them

How to remove ... plz. Any advise welcome

Been there, done that!

Do you have an electric polisher or are you doing this by hand? What polishes/abrasives do you have?

Hand.

I got Klasse twins. Pinnacle products: claybar, sourveign wax, detailers spritz, etc.

But, I'm willing to pick up whatever I need to do it by hand

I've been surprised by the scratches I've been able to remove quite easily using Meguiar's ScratchX. Go easy though.

Make sure you get a pure FOAM applicator. (this exact one can be had at AutoZone, etc and is great for scratch removal) Not a terry covered one. Foam disperses the product more evenly which is important for proper scratch removal. Rub in back and forth directions, not circular.

As suggested, Scratch X, available locally, is a possible choice. I like Sonus SFX #1 a lot, It's a more consistant polish. 3M Finesse It is also available at most places that sell pro auto paint supplies (check under auto body shop supplies in the yellow pages) and is a staple in my cabinet. Follow each of these up with an aplication of Klasse.

I pull out the Scratch-X and a foam applicator for quick repairs on small scratches. (Just as BradB described above)

If that doesn't take care of it, I head right for Sonus SFX 1, 2 and 3 (restore, perfect and enhance, I think) with my Porter Cable Dual Action (PCDA) and a foam pad. You can use Sonus SFX 1, 2 and 3 by hand with a foam applicator too... It's just a lot slower.

Recently a motorist dropped by my house with a few scratches that were dealer installed (yet another minimum-wage car wash attendant at the dealer thought he knew how to use a buffer). It took about 3 hours to buff out the scratches with the PCDA and Sonus 1, 2 and 3. I can't imagine how long it would have taken by hand...

I did the scratch x thing and it mostly worked and Klasse. Looking today the scratches are much lighter and some gone. I just need to go back and keep at it (but its raining now).

THANKS ALL

Got any pictures of before and after? I have the same problem, and am debating investing in the PCDA or just doing it by hand.

Joel,

Try it by hand first.

$5 Scratch-X
$2 Foam applicator

or even better

$7 Sonus SFX 1
$7 Sonus SFX 2
$7 Sonus SFX 3
$6 Three Foam applicators

This will save you a huge amount of cash. Unless you expect to regularly polish your paintwork or do a large amount of paint reconditioning (you haven't waxed your car in years) / swirlmark removal, the $150 isn't worth the few minutes of extra time it will take you to do the job by hand for a spot repair.

If anyone is going to buy the PCDA in the next few months (Oct, Nov 2005) send me a PM and I can help save you some $.

Thanks for the input. Think I am gonna invest in the Porter Cable anyway soon, as my MCS is JB/JB and though I follow the rules for washing/Zaino, I am still getting some swirl marking that is evident. How does this happen so fast??

Also, just want to take extra great care of my baby. I can't believe how owning a Mini has turned me into a detailing nut. I have always liked a clean car, and am a bit of a neat freak (you can't be a surgeon without being this way), but now I am truly off the deep end. It rained a few drops on Thompson yesterday and I was contemplating washing him today, even though I know it may rain the next 2 days.

Gotta love Arizona for the black car though. With a good wash, diligent use of the OXO dust brush, and Z6 I have made it almost 2 weeks with an almost perfect exterior appearance. Now if the inside could just match up. A 14 month old makes it a great deal more difficult, especially when he insists on crawling around when inside when I am doing work on Thompson!
