they aren't deep, but how could I get rid of them? I think they may be from the towels I'm using. Some Simoniz microfiber towel for drying and some other cotton diaper rag things, both from the autowashing section in Canadian Tire.

Washing AND Drying tools are the obvious cause of your problems. "proper techniques" could help you a lot too, probably.

Always use a 100% cotton or real wool mitt when washing the car. Don't use circular strokes, always just front to back with light pressure. Use a a quality auto shampoo will add lubrication between the mitt and the surface which is also essential in helping against scratching.

Dry with a "good" microfiber waffleweave towel. Double it over flat and pull it front to back. These are better than cotton bath towels and FAR better than diapers which get debris stuck in their short nap too easily which causes scratching. If you want something to get the bulk of the water off before using the waffleweave then use a synthetic chamois like the Absorber. But just "lay" these on the surface, lift, move to a new spot and repeat. Do not drap or wipe with these. The cause too much friction and will degrade the wax or scratch.

A well waxed car is EASY and fast to dry. A car that is not waxed is much more difficult. Wax is also a sacrificial layer for light swirls and scratching saving your paint.
