Scotchgard everything!
Scotchgard everything!
After reading about the dirty headliners and noticing that the dirt is getting to my carpet i'm thinking about scotchgarding everything. Does this sound like a good idea? I posted this in another thread, but it didn't seem to catch anyone's attention. Anybody have experience with scotchgard on the MINI carpet and headliner?
Is it possible to spray the scotchgard on a sponge first then wipe it on the headliner, since it seems quite difficult to cover the headliner without getting it in my eyes?
Second, can I just use scotchgard auto for everything or should I get the scotchgard carpet for the carpet?
I've never used this stuff so some tips would be helpful.

I scotchguarded my seats and the fumes were pretty bad. And it took a few days AFTER the seats dried for the smell to go away. But now I can't smell it at all. I think if you used it in a well ventilated area and didn't inhale deeply, it should be okay (I did it in my garage). As far as scotchguarding the headliner and the carpets, I think the carpet is a good idea. I believe Scotchguard makes a product just for carpets. There's also 303 Protectant which everyone raves about. I'm not sure about the headliner though...but if it's cloth, it should be okay. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
the headliner is cloth and it's one of the things I would like to scotchgard most since it's the light grey color. I haven't smelled it yet, so I don't know how the fumes would be. As I said I have the scotchgard auto, I guess I'll just do the carpet sometime soon and wait until I"m going out of town for the summer to do the headliner since I won't be home for 6 weeks. I'll make sure to wear googles and those nose protector things.
One thing though, my car still has that sort of new car smell to it and I really like it. Will the scotchgard most likely kill this smell.

As far as Scotchguard being removed from the market, it's still being sold as I bought a can from Pep Boys about 3 weeks ago. I'm thinking it's probably an updated formula and they took out whatever ingredient was causing the health concerns. At least I hope so!

I was also able to pick up scotchgard at walmart and autozone and since the scotchgard official website is still up, i'm guessing they fixed it.
has anyone ever scotchgarded their headliner though? I would really be interested in doing this.

Could your issue explain the disproportionate numbers of BALD/Clean Shaven MINI owners? Now, I'm not recommending you make any changes to your hairstyle, or put any "products" in it for fashion's sake but... I do wonder if you need a set of the "MINI Antimacassars"
.Peace,

Edit: Oh .... he said headLINER, not headREST!.... Nevermind!
