Wool mitt care ?
Wool mitt care ?
I've searched the forum but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. This is I'm sure a noob question: How do I care for my wool wash mitt ?
After using my mitt for the first time last week, I realized I didn't know how to properly clean it! I rinsed it thoroughly several times with my hose, rung it out, and let it air dry. Is there a better approach ?
thanks!

In the summer when the humidity is ridiculous, I throw mine in the dryer on the fluff only or delicate cycle(no heat) for a few minutes. So far so good, mine is about 4 years old and holding up well.

Real sheepskin woolmitts are made from animals, lol. Some mitts will naturally shed more than others. I've also noticed that some mitts will have plant material embedded in the skin..kinda gross..but hey, it's natural.
So I've learned a few things. One of the most important ones is that when I wring out the mitt, make sure the end you squeeze is the open end, and not the closed end. If the mitt is full of soapy water and you frequently squeeze the closed end of the mitt, the water trapped inside will act like a water balloon, and you'll soon find the skin give way and blow a hole through it. Point is, make sure you have a way for the water to escape when you wring it.
Also don't soak the mitts in buckets of soap water until the next wash. This tends to degrade them as the skin absorbs so much water, the wool tends to get loose more.
After each wash, just rinse them in clean water, and let them air dry. If you keep them in bags, you might find them mouldy at some point.

) and we grew up with all kinds of sheepskin products in our house. Both of my kids had sheepskin mats from birth, just a sheepskin for keeping in the crib to sleep on or whatever. Anyway, I got in the habit of machine washing them and drying them(I had no choice, when a toddler won't go to bed without it, you do what you have to). And here in the humidity capital of the world, things NEVER dry! My son left for college last year and took his sheepskin with him, the same one I got the week he was born. As long as sheepskins get thoroughly dried, they should last for many years. I don't bag mine here since they will get damp, I hang them on a hook in the garage, or store in the wall cabinet just loose.
Just remember to get it dry and it should last for years.
